Employee will serve as a Surgical Technician located at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Healthcare System in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:
Performs as a primary scrub person handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures (e.g., open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery, transplantation, gynecology, urology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, general surgery, invasive procedures, orthopedic surgery, robotics).
Sets up sterile fields for each procedure, to include a wide variety of equipment (e.g., air-powered, fiber optic, laparoscopic, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy, urologic, recording devices, robotic, and other operating room (OR) supplies and equipment).
Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
Utilizes universal precautions and follows infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment.
Assist with patient care (i.e., positioning, prepping, obtaining supplies).
Performs sponge and instrument counts in conjunction with the Registered Nurse; accountable for all surgical instruments and equipment during surgical procedure.
Assists the surgeon by preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, apply skin staples, cut sutures, and prepare prosthesis and surgical devices during procedures.
Transports patients to and from the OR, as needed.
Utilizes the Generic Inventory Package to maintain adequate stock of surgical supplies, including ordering and restocking cabinets, specialty carts, and secondary storage containers.
Assists with the responsibilities of the front desk (e.g., prepare daily schedules; scheduling; telephone support; work orders; etc.)
Performs non-technical maintenance of equipment to prevent malfunctions.
Provides guidance and supervision, and assist in training residents, students, volunteers, and other team members in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling instruments, OR procedures, including the scrub role.
Performs quality improvement activities; and other duties as necessary.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Specialized experience includes: possessing knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic techniques to prepare/set-up and protect the sterile field during surgery; anticipating the needs of the surgeon; performing sponge and instrument counts during surgery; assisting the surgeon by preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, apply skin staples, cut sutures, and prepare prosthesis and surgical devices during procedures; possessing an in-depth knowledge of universal precautions, infection control policies/procedures; instrument and equipment sterilization/cleaning techniques and responsible for Reusable Medical Equipment. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successful completion of One full year of Graduate Education or an internship meets the specialized experience. Education is creditable only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience, as described above, are also qualifying.

Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of who are at stages of unconsciousness.
There are extensive periods of regular and recurring walking, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. The Surgical Technician must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon.
