Surgical Technician Service Specialist Arthroplasty

Job Summary:

The Surgical Technician Service Specialist Arthroplasty (STSSA) provides support to the surgical team by performing direct and indirect tasks under the supervision of a registered nurse which contribute to the quality care of the patients undergoing surgical procedures.

The STSSA serves as a technical expert with advanced knowledge of instrumentation, equipment, set-up, and surgical technique for all arthroplasty cases (including but not limited to total knee, total hip, total shoulder, uni-condylar and patello-femoral joint replacement surgeries). The STSSA functions as 2nd assistant for all required surgical procedures.

The STSSA must maintain competencies of a STI and a STII. The STSSA must maintain proficiency in all sports procedures performed on the unit and will be expected to fill the scrub role for these cases as needed. The STSSA will provide educational support for the Perioperative Nurse Educator and play a lead role in training and education for all staff on arthroplasty cases. The STSSA will facilitate aspects of Arthroplasty cases including but not limited to collaborating with the surgeon, podium coordinators, CNIII, vendors, implant room, and central sterile processing to assure availability of necessary instrumentation, implants, and preference card maintenance.

Job Qualifications:

Must have both theoretical and technical knowledge of total knee, total hip, total shoulder, uni-condylar, and patello-femoral joint replacement procedures. Must be able to work adeptly within a team and serve as team leader. Must be able to identify potential problems and escalate as needed.

Education Required:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent

Certifications/Licensure Required:

Surgical Technologist Certification from NBSTSA

Experience Required:
5 years recent experience as both back table and second assist on Total Knee and Total Hip Arthroplasty.

Skills Required:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to demonstrate the following: technical skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, planning, flexibility, organizational skills, and accountability.

Demonstrates all the competencies of and STI and STII. Displays effective leadership ability, facilitates teamwork, displays competence and character in their work ethic, and serves as a mentor/role model for other Surgical Technologists.

Qualifications * High School Diploma or equivalent, required. * Successful completion from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologist, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), required. * a person may be employed or contracted with to practice surgical technology during the 12-month period immediately following successful completion of a surgical technology program, but may not continue to be employed beyond that period without documentation that the employee holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential required. * Must be and remain in good standing with NYS regulations, required. * Prior OR Technician experience, required * BCLS certification, preferred.
