Surgical Technologist

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist assist the surgical team in delivering direct and indirect care to the patient in the Operating Room, providing quality health care through the development of an organizational climate that is professional, compassionate and responsive to the patient, physicians and ASSOCIATES.

The Surgical Technologist must possess knowledge, judgment and skills based on the principles of biological, physiological, behavioral and social sciences within the scope of a Surgical Technologist basic training program. The Surgical Technologist assists the surgical team in identifying patient needs and plans and initiates interventions for resolution when applicable.

The Surgical Technologist demonstrates an awareness of patient's rights and works to ensure patient privacy, safety and comfort.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities.

  • Assists in damp dusting light fixtures, tables, Mayo and ring stands.

  • Assists in checking supplies, instruments and equipment against preference card and/or obtaining any missing items.

  • Responsible for scrubbing assigned procedures.

  • Anticipates the surgeon's needs in performing the operation and provides for a safe and sterile surgical environment.

  • Uses supplies and suture judiciously.

  • Accurately handles all specimens.

  • Assists in cleaning the patient prior to applying surgical dressing.

  • Assists in the care and maintenance of instruments, equipment and supplies.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the location, care and operation of all surgical instruments, equipment and supplies.

  • Assists in cleaning and restocking all the operating rooms.

  • Initiates and/or assists in updating preference cards.

  • Adheres to Universal Precautions.

  • Attends staff meetings.

  • Seeks opportunities to improve department or interdepartmental processes.

  • Serves as a clinical resource to department staff, students, volunteers and other departments, and contributes to the teamwork essential to ensuring quality patient care

  • Takes appropriate measures to ensure safety of patients.

Qualifications

License/Certification/Registration:

  • Current surgical technologist certification or LVN licensure required for Surgical Tech II. (Certification is not required for employees hired into surgical technologist position with Medical Center of Lewisville prior to September 2009).

  • Eligibility for certification required for Surgical Tech I, and certification must be attained within 180 days of graduation from surgical technology program.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology required.

Experience:

  • Documented clinical knowledge and skills related to Surgical Services.

  • Previous experience, as a Surgical Technologist preferred.

  • Ability to work with others to ensure quality patient care.

  • Strong problem solving skills.

He/she operates diagnostic equipment and processes images. Associate prepares patient's X-ray room, equipment, supplies and medication as indicated and delivers patient services using various imaging modalities. Associate practices proper radiation safety techniques on all exams performed. He/she maintains safe environment for patients, visitors, staff and co- workers. Supports and helps achieve the departmental and hospital goals. Job Duties: * Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities. * Perform special assignments as needed/requested. * Serves as a clinical resource to department staff, students, volunteers and other departments, and contributes to the teamwork essential to ensuring quality patient care. * Takes appropriate measures to ensure safety of patients. * Attend staff meetings and in-services. * Transport patients safely. * Provide care of patients with a variety of medical diagnosis and resulting complications. * Obtains and checks physician's order and requisition for accuracy. (i.e., Patient charts, prescription, outpatient order). * Prepares patient for exam. Positions and assists the patients onto the examination table. * Prepares room, equipment and supplies for the exam. Follows prescribed safety techniques in administering general and specific radiographs by adjusting proper KVP, MA and desired exposure time. Position patient and selects proper film size. * Observes proper Radiation safety techniques on all exams by completing pregnancy forms, utilizing lead shield. * Processes images in accordance with Computed Radiography and PACS protocols. * Performs portable procedures in Operating room, Intensive care units, Emergency room, Labor & Delivery, patient's room and any clinical areas. * Records information on patient history and examination and records any unusual occurrences. * Charges the patient with accurate procedure codes. Files the appropriate paperwork and records to the patient file. * Participates in the departmental quality improvement program. * Assists with other duties as assigned by the AVP/Director & Imaging Manager. * Must be well trained to handle different ages and risk factors when performing diagnostic procedures. * Works with students and department associates to a build the teamwork concept, quality patient care and good interpersonal skills. * Efficient in the operation of PACS and Computed Radiography systems. * Provides excellent customer service to our patients, visitors, staff and co-workers. * Performs Point of Care Testing for Urine HCG and Creatinine. Calculates GFR. * Attends staff meetings and in-services. * Completes educational activities as assigned. * Follows proper procedure for infection control. * Assists physician's offices, outpatients and hospital associates promptly and courteously. * Positively identifies the correct patient prior to the performance of procedure utilizing 2 patient identifiers. Qualifications License/Certification/Registration: * Must be registered/eligible by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (R). If other modalities are performed and associate does not hold advanced certification for those modalities, associate shall obtain within 6 months of hire/promotion or completion of training program. * Must possess Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT) from TDH. * Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Education: * Graduate of an Accredited Radiologic Technology Program or equivalent with appropriate state licensure and National Registry(s). Experience: * Previous experience preferred.
