Position #: 9300 - PER DIEM.


  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures and other items appropriate to the procedure. Assists the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon.

  • Establishes and maintains an organized sterile field. Selects proper sterilization methods for instruments and equipment: sterilizes prior to procedure, and verifies instruments are sterile.

  • Adheres to policies and procedures in aseptic techniques. Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or break in aseptic technique observed and reports information to the circulating nurse.

  • Assists with pulling cases and checks case cart for completeness, obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins.

  • Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card.

  • Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse.

  • Performs scrub assistance for all procedures.

  • Assists the circulating nurse with implementing a plan of care to include positioning, confirmation of operative site, updating physician preference cards, care of specimens, and room turnover.

  • Accounts for instruments, trays, implants, before during and after the case. Begins Sterilizing process while in the surgical suite by counting for completeness of tray, initiating cleansing/sterilizing process.

  • Has access to supplies in medication storage areas, including needles and syringes.



  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion/Graduate of a New Jersey approved/accredited program for surgical technicians.

  • One year of work experience in healthcare surgical services preferred; Specialty surgical services may require specific training, experience, knowledge, and skills.

  • Certification from Nationally recognized body for Surgical Technician preferred.

  • Frequent physical demands include: Standing , Walking , Carry objects , Push/Pull , Twisting , Bending , Reaching forward , Reaching overhead , Squat/kneel/crawl , Wrist position deviation , Pinching/fine motor activities , Talk or Hear

Responsibilities * Prepare items for decontamination by sorting and selecting the correct process either manual and/or mechanical to assure integrity and prevent damage to instruments and patient care equipment. * Prepares instruments for exposure of all surfaces to the decontamination process which includes flushing and opening all lumens, disassembling and opening locks, and proper loading of mechanical washers. * Operates all decontamination washers, washer sterilizers, sonic washers and dryers and all other manual methods for cleaning. * Assembles sets with the use of count sheets, replaces missing instrumentation and/or identifies missing instrumentation. * Wraps, packs and labels all instrument trays and single instrument packs, basins and other items. Requirements * High school diploma or equivalency. * One year related experience.
