PeaceHealth is seeking a Surgical Support Aide

  • Operating Room for a 1.0 full time equivalent Non-Exempt position. This position will be working Evening shift with shift durations of 8 Hours.

Responsible for assisting in tasks involving patient care and maintenance of the operating room. The primary focus is to help with set-up and efficient turnover of the operating rooms and caring for the instruments and equipment to be used during the surgical procedure.

1.Assist in pulling instruments and supplies for surgical procedures. Set up equipment for surgical procedure.
2.Order and restock inventory and supplies for department. Stock and put supplies away in individual operating rooms.
3.Clean, disinfect, and sterilize equipment. Assists with clean-up and room turnover.
4.Provide assistance with moving and lifting patients. Transport patients.
5.Transport specimens to appropriate area/unit.
6.Performs other duties as assigned.



  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Previous experience with sterile/aseptic techniques preferred.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient's needs.

  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required at date of hire.


  • Well organized, detail oriented and self-motivated.

  • Ability to coordinate activities and work collaboratively with others.

  • Basic computer/keyboarding skills including MS Office applications.

  • Understanding of operating room protocols.


Oregon West Network:

  • Six months of patient care experience required.
  • CNA or Medical Assistant certification preferred.


  • Work requires active physical exertion at least 66% of the time.

  • Ability to lift objects weighing 50 lbs. or less.

  • Work requires frequent exposure to skin or lung irritants extreme cold or heat sharp instruments or, dangerous equipment; reasonably anticipated exposure to blood and body fluids once per month or more.

  • Job duties frequently require intense concentration and attention to detail (34-65% of work time).

Participate in and enhance the surgical care provided by the surgical team during the pre operative phase of patient assessments through teamwork. Assist intra-operatively with technical skills and post operatively across the department to provide positive patient outcomes. Job Description Details: PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: * Establish, maintain, and monitor a sterile field in a clean and safe environment within the operating room for each patient. * Maintain appropriate surgical attire utilizing Universal Precautions Policy for personal protective equipment for self and other team members. * Prepare surgical cases by obtaining appropriate sterilization and instrumentation, knowledge of equipment sterilization procedures, and obtaining equipment in a timely fashion prior to procedure. * Assist in distribution of specimens and countable items, and anticipate needs of the surgical team appropriately as the situation arises with flexibility. * Participate in services and educational offerings, and offer assistance in a particular skill to enhance self and team members in unfamiliar areas of knowledge and skills. * Circulate with RN to assist the operating room team in the care and handling of professional supplies and equipment in both normal and emergency situations. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Surgical Technician Certification through an approved military, academic or hospital-based program required. Massachusetts Department of Public Health standards introduced by statute in 2013 require surgical technologists hired after July 1, 2013 to maintain a certified surgical technologist credential. All Surgical Techs hired by SPHS prior to July 1, 2013 will be grandfathered. * One (1) year experience in an acute care hospital. * CPR Certification. WORKING CONDITIONS: * Requires working with equipment or performing procedures where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises or muscle pulls. * Regular and routine exposure to occupational hazards or contagious disease which requires Universal Precautions. * Requires standing up to several hours at a time on an hourly basis and ability to reach and grasp objects.
