RN Supervisor, Surgery Department

Waterloo, IA - Allen Hospital

Full-time, Shifts vary withing 6am-6pm

Responsible for supervising the daily activities of the unit utilizing quality and cost-effective patient care principles to including operations, staffing levels and employee relations. Collaborates with nursing leadership and education professionals to organize, implement and evaluate education programs (orientation, in-services, competencies, classroom, etc.) to facilitate skill development, competency and proficiency in standards of care for perioperative services, perioperative leadership, clinical staff and patients. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Collaborates with physicians and other health care workers, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care while maintaining a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses, Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health within the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration with other care givers.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritizes, reassigns and redistributes work, to include scheduling and delegating workflow of patient care in an organized manner.

  • Reviews/reassigns patient assignments based on continuity and skill level of the team member.

  • Coordinates scheduling and maintains appropriate staffing levels and effectively communicates with others to ensure staffing requirements are met.

  • Coordinates orientation program and training of newly hired team members.

  • Coordinates staff education/in-services/specialized skilled training programs including competences.

  • Collaborates with the Manager/Director, effectively resolving complex unit situations, such as patient complaints and crises as they occur within the unit.

  • Provides assistance/orientation to those team members that are temporarily reassigned to their unit for the shift.

  • Evaluates and guides staff through coaching and provides immediate feedback and responds to difficult inquiries and problems. Provides feedback and input to Manager/Director for ongoing performance management.

  • Completes and issues performance evaluations with input from the Manager/Director.

  • Serves as the administrator for surgical services electronic educational platform.

  • Plans, organizes and facilitates ongoing education and competency for team members; will assess educational needs of perioperative team members.

  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of in-services, educational offerings and competencies by using formal and informal teaching methods.

  • Assists leadership in facilitating clinical orientation for new team members; may provide limited at-the-elbow support as requested or collaborate with preceptors and unit leadership to establish action plans for orientees who are struggling. Mentors less experienced team members; guides professional behaviors while adhering to the policies and procedures of the organization.

  • Collaborates with the Manager/Director to complete patient and employee rounding to meet standards.

  • Assists Manager/Director with performance improvement action plans and implementation of plans. Completes appropriate reports as delegated by Manager/Director.

  • Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and hold them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.

  • Subject matter expert in perioperative services, including, but not limited to: Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses standards (AORN), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission (TJC) and all other patient safety standards as they relate to the operating room.

  • Participates in hospital and departmental committees related to infection prevention, tissue safety, radiation safety and fire safety.

  • Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and hold them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.

  • Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients. Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.

  • Collaborates with leadership to support implementation of evidenced based practice into the department setting.

  • Serves as a change agent to support implementation and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or currently enrolled in RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with completion within two years of hire date. Master's degree in nursing or related field preferred.

  • Minimum of three year's operating room experience as a registered nurse. Previous supervisory experience preferred. Proven teaching expertise preferred.

  • Current license in the state of Iowa or meets criteria established by Iowa Board of Nursing.

  • Certified Nurse Operating Room within one year of hire.

  • Advance certifications per specialty preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge of field, in-depth knowledge of the "why's".

  • Ability to maintain current professional expertise.

  • Exhibits discretion and sound judgment in all aspects of the job.

  • Promotes positive interpersonal relations and serves as a role model within the department and with hospital personnel.

  • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

  • Multicultural sensitivity.

  • Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email and web browser.

  • Customer/patient focused.

  • Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

  • Self-motivated, able to work independently with little oversight.

  • Demonstrates effective decision-making and problem-solving skills, flexibility, and the ability to take a leadership role in facilitating organizational change through partnerships with staff and managers.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of clinical skills related to patient safety in the operating room.

  • Demonstrates the ability to fairly and consistently interpret, apply and follow personnel policies/procedures.

  • Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.
