The Surgical Services Aide assists with duties as they pertain to the daily operations of the Operating Room and Short procedure unit, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Keep warmers filled with blankets and solutions. Restocks supplies.

  • Transports patients as needed through their surgical experience.

  • Performs clerical duties; orders office supplies; answers telephone and relays messages.

  • Acquires information on surgical procedures and communicates this information to the Clinical Coordinator/nurse in charge.

  • Notifies X-ray Department of any procedures requiring a technician, under direction of the nurse.

  • Notifies Clinical Coordinator/ Charge Nurse, X-ray, Blood Bank, PACU, Instrument Room, Holding Room, Nurse Manager and Anesthesiologist of any added procedure or cancellation.

  • Monitors temperature and humidity per guidelines, records and reports as necessary.

  • Assists anesthesia staff during intubation.

  • Cleans up anesthesia areas after each case. Processes endoscopes per manufacturer guidelines.

  • Complies with established chain of command for work related problems.

  • Maintains responsibility for own development through active participation with in services and/or continuing education programs and annual competencies.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sits up to 1 hour per day. Stand for up to 12 hours per day; possibly 6 hours at a time. Walk up to 8-10 hours per day; up to 2 hours at a time. (Required to use manual dexterity for handling and twisting/turning). Consistently lift, carry and push objects up to 10 lbs.; frequently lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds; frequently push objects up to 100+ pounds (i.e. carts etc). Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must have the ability to move quickly. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision. Depth perception necessary. Ability to tolerate visual monotony.

EDUCATION:

High School diploma, BLS/CPR required.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Knowledge of medical terminology and knowledge of hospital policies and procedures required. Competency in computer skills required.
