Maria Parham Health Surgical Tech-First Assistant Job Summary The Certified Surgical First Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team. Provides assistance to the surgeon by aiding in exposure, hemostasis, closing the incision, and other technical functions that assist the surgeon to carry out a safe operation.
The Certified Surgical First Assistant will assist all surgical specialty teams/ surgeons. Reports to: Director of Surgical Services FLSA:
Non-exempt Grade: EEO: □ 01 Officials and Managers □ 02 Professionals X 03 Technicians □ 04 Sales Workers □ 05 Administrative Support Workers □ 06 Craft Workers □ 07 Operatives □ 08 Laborers and Helpers □ 09 Service Workers Job Requirements Minimum Education x High school diploma or equivalent □ Preferred x Required Required Skills Certifications: □ Basic Life Support (BLS) □ Certification from a Surgical Assistant/Surgical First Assistant program is required □ National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certificate is required Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Minimum Work Experience Two years of experience as a Surgical First Assistant Essential Functions Aiding in positioning the patient for surgery and aiding in draping Aids in exposing of the surgery area for the surgeon by using retractors, sponges, suction, and other OR equipment Passing instruments during the surgery Aids in hemostasis by sponging, clamping, tying, or cauterizing vessels, or suturing tissue layers as directed by the surgeon Responsible for counting sponges, needles, instruments, and other items before and after the surgery Closing the incision at the end of the surgery as directed by the surgeon.
Applying dressings to the surgical wounds Works cooperatively and collaboratively with the OR team and surgeons to assure the necessary equipment, supplies, and instrumentation is available for the surgery Assists the circulator to prepare the OR room for surgery and assists in cleaning the OR rooms between cases and at the end of the schedule and participates in stocking equipment and supplies in the OR rooms. Responsible for assuring the sterility of instruments Responsible to take a patient care assignment and take OR Scrub Tech Call. Must be available at all times and be within 20 minutes of the hospital when On Call.
