POSITION SUMMARY: A Surgical Technologist First Assist has the technical skills to assist the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures.


Working under the direction of a physician


, the STFA may provide direct care to patients preoperatively, intraoperatively and postoperatively.

As a scrubbed member of the operating room team, plans for the STFA anticipating the surgeon#s needs throughout the procedures.# Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and educational experiences in support of departmental and divisional nursing philosophy and objectives, as well as, Health System initiatives.

EDUCATION: High School diploma required.# Completion of a surgical technologist program or other successful completion of education which includes aseptic technique and operative procedures.# Successful completion of a program in Surgical First Assisting. LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS: Surgical Technologist Certification (CST).# Certified First Assist (e.g., CST-FA) preferred. Successful completion of annual clinical, age and job specific competencies and skill verification tools required.# Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic technique required.# Familiarity with medical terminology.# Good organizational skills required.# Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford is seeking individuals to join our COVID-19 saliva test laboratory team working in conjunction with SHIELD Illinois. The Medical Technologist II position will perform PCR testing and supervise laboratory technicians. Laboratory work requires strict adherence to standard operating procedures as part of the COVID-19 SHIELD Illinois initiative. Full and part time positions for both day and evening shifts are available. Positions are eligible for a comprehensive benefit package offered by the University of Illinois. Duties: * Supervise and assign work to laboratory personnel * Operate PCR machine to perform RT-PCR on prepared plates * Ensure PCR samples are processed properly and troubleshoot any processing errors * Verify PCR readings and download results to IT systems * Ensure lab results are transferred properly and submitted to SHIELD Illinois servers * Other duties as assigned Qualifications: Doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution; and Have at least 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.
