The Surgical Care Assistant performs routine patient-centered activities in the Operating Room in a manner conducive to the safety and comfort of the surgical patient. Involved in all phases of zone specific instrument and equipment care, preparation, and inventory restocking; Assist with room turnover, empty trash, mop floor; Transport specimen; Serves as a retractor holder during surgery.

Performs under the supervision of the registered professional nurse.

Position requires weekend and holiday rotation.

Training and Experience:

  • Successful completion of position specific orientation which consists of theory and supervised clinical experience.

Working Environment: Work in a surgical environment. May be exposed to communicable diseases.

Physical Demands:

  • Good physical and mental health required. Must be able to handle equipment and supplies in a careful manner.

  • Position entails a substantial amount of walking and standing. May need to assist with moderate to heavy lifting.

Working Relationships:

Work with physicians, professional nursing personnel, surgical technologists, non-professional ancillary personnel, patients and their significant others.


High School graduate or equivalent-must be able to read and write.
