Job Summary:

The Surgical Assistant primary functions are those of a Surgical Technologist. Additionally, Surgical Assistants provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.

In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:

A minimum of 2 years as a Surgical Technologist experience is required (one year may include time spent in orientation/training).

EDUCATION DESCRIPTION:

High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Post high school education, certification or diploma required.

Completion of a Surgical Technologist program, completion of Military Operating Room Specialist course or the Froedtert Health sponsored apprentice II program required. Successful completion of required surgical assist training.

TRAINING DESCRIPTION:

If practicing as a surgical assist successful completion of required surgical assist training.

LICENSURE DESCRIPTION:

Certification as a Surgical Technologist. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire.

Certification is required for staff moving into the role after 7/1/2020. Staff in the role as of 7/1/2020 are not required to be certified for as long as they continuously remain in the role and meet the criteria in the job description.
