The Surgical Assistant is responsible for assisting the Surgeons during assigned operations. The Surgical Assistant will maintain current knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques related to the specific operative procedures performed. The SA must maintain knowledge and proficiency in applying the principles of asepsis and infection control.
The Surgical Assistant will actively participate in room preparation for the surgical case. The Surgical Assistant verifies that any radiological films and or report pertinent to the procedure are displayed in the OR for viewing during the procedure.
Ensures that the OR suite has appropriate supplies and equipment needed for the procedure. Performs the duties of the Surgical Assistant during assigned surgical procedures as directed and supervised by the surgeon.
The SA ensures the accuracy of positioning, prepping and draping of the patient prior to the surgical procedure. Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleed points, ligating vessels and by other means directed and supervised by the Surgeon.
Sutures the fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissue under the direction of the Surgeon. Assists with the insertion of drains, catheters, and prosthetic devices as directed and supervised by the Surgeon. Applies skin closure and post operative wound dressings.
Graduate of Certified Surgical Assisting program and successfully passing certification exam. BLS certification required. Two years OR experience preferred.
