The department clerk performs secretarial duties utilizing knowledge of medical terminology and hospital procedures, providing clerical support for the pre-admission process for patients with a wide variety of surgical and procedural diagnoses. Compiles and records medical charts, reports, and correspondence using the electronic medical record (EMR). Answers telephones, maintains files and orders departmental supplies.


High school diploma or GED.

At least 1 year's experience in a hospital/office setting

Working knowledge of medical terminology

Strong Communication Skills

Basic Computer Skills

Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft explorer, preferably with the minimum of 45 wpm.

Analytical ability to prioritize workload.

VIEW JOBS 3/7/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-06-05T00:00 Reporting to a Clinical Associate and working under the supervision of a registered nurse and certified surgical technologist, the extern will follow the department policies, procedures and standards. The extern will assist the surgeon during the operative procedure by maintaining inventory, passing instruments and supplies, and holding retractors. Cleans operating room and stores equipment and supplies. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served (newborn through geriatric). REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: * The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit(s). This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population served. * Employee must have completed a clinical rotation and is within two semesters of completion of their surgical technologist program. * Work requires approximately one to three months on the job experience necessary in order to acquire necessary familiarity with surgeons' preferences, be able to accurately identify large volumes of surgical instruments and supplies, and gain knowledge of unit policies and procedures. * Work requires the interpersonal skills necessary to comfort patients, family members and/or significant others; and to communicate effectively with other patient care providers. * Work requires analytical ability necessary to prioritize work load.
