Summary:

The Surgery Aide-Pharmacy Tech will perform various patient care activities and related non-professional services in caring for the personal needs and comforts of patients, under the direct supervision and direction of the RN, Team leader, Manager or Administrator. Responsible for maintaining an adequate supply of medications and supplies; unpacking/medication storage upon delivery; performing duties of inventory control clerk; and stocking automated dispensing cabinets. Must be accountable to the policies and procedures of the organization.

  • Assembles the necessary supplies needed for each surgical procedure.

  • Transfers patients to surgery in a safe manner.

  • Properly cleans operating rooms between surgical procedures.

  • Assists with all other OR and facility wide housekeeping duties throughout day and end of day

  • Restocks and orders supplies.

  • Restocks anesthesia machines.

  • Assists RN as directed.

  • Transports specimens to lab

  • Properly decontaminates and sterilizes endoscopes.

  • Properly maintains all required logbooks relative to scope cleaning according to documentation requirements.

  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient environment.

  • Advocates for patient's needs through communication and the interdisciplinary planning process.


  1. Understands and applies statutes and regulations of controlled substances. (Minimizes discrepancies in the Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADCs), C-II's stored in Narc Vault, etc.)

  2. Able to access and use the department computers to order medications, retrieve e-mails, and other functions of FRHS Network and Pharmacy Common.

  3. Able to maintain adequate stock of medications through use of wholesaler and materials management department.

  4. Able to fill and replace floor stock and automated cabinets.

  5. Competent to perform necessary calculations and product identification.

  6. Knows and follows statutes and regulations regarding outpatient prescription maintenance.

  7. Properly performs duties relating to ADC support for the surgery and other areas.

  8. Keeps controlled substances properly controlled. Reconciles wasting of narcotic substances where needed. Works with staff to resolve discrepancies when needed.

  9. Learns and applies ADC software to add/delete products, adjust quantities, run reports for management and documentation, problem solving and education of other users.

  10. Able to performs a cycle count to ensure accurate inventory levels of all FRSC ADCs

  11. Works with nursing to ensure an inventory and expiration check on all ADCs once monthly. Ensures documentation of such.

  12. Accurately fills and maintains inventory levels of surgery ADC and others as needed.

  13. Responds to user crisis within the department.

  14. Complies with sterility/aseptic techniques required in the surgery suites.

  15. Assists in development and installation of other ADC suppliers when needed.

  16. Assists with receiving the orders, returns, invoices, etc.

  17. Properly performs duties relating to purchasing tech position.

  18. Sends a wholesale order as needed. Observes contract compliance, cost of goods, formulary status, and industrial request.

  19. Removes expired goods from patient fill areas. Products are then either destroyed or sent via a return distributor in a timely manner.

  20. Maintains documentation on how to order non-wholesaler items complete with names and account numbers.

  21. Keep expired narcs orderly; ensure proper and accurate inventory of items; achieve periodic destruction through a return distributor.

  22. Oversees and ensures compliance with checking/recording refrigerator/freezer temps.


  • Certified Tech Duties (Tech II) - can be performed after completion of Critical Point Competencies and training in compounding.

  • Knows and uses proper aseptic technic. Performs quality assurance tests as assigned.

  • Performs appropriate product storage requirements, IV stability and sterility, expirations of compounded items, labels and manages compounded products to minimize waste.

  • Properly uses sterile compounding equipment.

Hours will be dependent on patient census and workload. Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, to include after-hours and weekends as necessary.

The requirements listed below must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION:

GED or High School Diploma required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) license from the State of Nebraska preferred.

Basic Life Support (BLS) obtained within one full month from date of hire required.

Certified Pharmacy Tech (CPhT) obtained within one year from date of hire required.

Previous Experience Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:

Previous healthcare experience preferred.

Skills/Knowledge Requirements:

SKILLS:

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language required.

KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledgeable about product storage requirements, IV stability and sterility, expirations of compounded items, labeling and management of compounded products to minimize waste preferred.

Knowledgeable about the facilities and equipment used in sterile compounding, including proper use preferred.
