Roles & Responsibilities:

The Surgeon'sAssistant will assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons,registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. The Surgeon's Assistant willprepare the operating room and patient prior to surgery and may assist thesurgeon during the procedures. The Surgeon's Assistant will perform supportactivities in the Unit as assigned.

Duties and

Responsibilities:

  • Performs "scrub" assignment according toestablished guidelines, including gowning and gloving procedure

  • Applies principles and practices of asepsis.Maintains and monitors aseptic technique at all times and institutes correctivemeasures in the event of contamination

  • Distributes processed instrument sets, equipmentand supplies in appropriate work and storage area

  • Sets up sterile instrument table and preparessupplies according to type of operation

  • Assists in draping of patient and operative areaaccording to need. Observes and protects patient by correct positioning,application of restraint, strict aseptic practice and maintenance of asepticenvironment

  • Assists and anticipates needs of surgeon forinstruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies according to knowledge ofprocedural requirements and constant monitoring of progress

  • Maintains correct count of sponges, needles, andinstruments with the circulating nurse and report correctness of discrepanciesaccording to established policy and procedure

  • Discards soiled materials in appropriatereceptacle, decontaminate all equipment, instruments, and reusable supplies andcleans room as prescribed

  • Maintains and cares for all specimens as directedto prevent loss or damage

  • Assists in room clean up and makes preparationsfor next procedure

  • Mixes medicated solution at the sterile field,only under the direct supervision of the Medical Director dispensing themedication

  • Shows medication label to person administeringthe medication. Announces in an audible voice the name, concentration, amountand route of administration of the medication

  • Attends quality assurance meetings to monitorquality outcomes

  • Participates in ordering supplies and necessaryequipment to maintain effective operations. Attends ongoing staff developmentas assigned to maintain appropriate knowledge and skills

  • Attends ongoing staff development as assigned tomaintain appropriate knowledge and skills

  • Performs other duties as required

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED/Equivalent from anaccredited institution

  • Successful completion of a Surgical Technicianprogram

  • Certification in OR Technology from the NationalBoard of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting preferred

  • 1-3 years experience in ambulatory, surgeryoperating room setting required

Typically reports to amanager, director or division head. * Servesas an intermediary between supervisor and other departmental staff bytransmitting written and oral requests, messages and instructions * Assistswith budget preparation and is responsible for monitoring and maintainingrecords of expenses for variance reporting * Assistsin the planning and logistical coordination of meetings and office activities,forums and conferences * Mayreview and revise brochures, announcements or other informational itemsregarding program and/or departmental operations. Drafts, edits and formatsmaterials such as flyers, leaflets and letters * Mayprepare minutes of meetings, agendas, correspondence, statistical reports,tables and other documents and transcribes dictation as needed * Preparesand follows up on purchase orders, change orders, check requests and petty cashvouchers. Processes and follows up on tuition and other forms of reimbursementfor assigned staff * Makestravel arrangements and accommodations.
