As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE REPAIRER, WG-5801-8, you will:

This position is located in the Joint Forces Headquarters-State, Logistics Directorate (J-4), Surface Maintenance Facility. The purpose of this position is to perform limited diagnosis, routine repairs, and maintenance on combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment. May assist higher graded mechanics in the performance of maintenance duties.

Qualifications

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

COMPATIBLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENT: Selected individual must be assigned to a compatible military position in the following MOS/AOC within 90 days of effective date of hire: Warrant Officer: WOBR 12,13,14,19, 25, 91 WMOS 92, 94, 882A Enlisted: ECMF 12, 13, 14, 19, 25, 88, 91, 92, 94. Military grade inversion within the full-time work force is not permitted. The military grade of the full time supervisor must equal or exceed the military grade of personnel supervised.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and is able to use common tools and equipment in the line of work.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 12 months experience or training using common hand and power tools and a small variety of test and measurement devices to make mechanical repairs. Experience removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories. Experience which demonstrates a basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to vehicles; and skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments. Experience demonstrating an understanding of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships. Experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufactures' repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities (KSAs): Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a separate sheet(s) addressing the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) and how they relate to work experience, education or training. This document will be used to determine the PAY GRADE to which an applicant may qualify.

NOTE: This is a Temporary Appointment. NTE 29 Sept 2018, may be extended depending on funding and mission requirements. If an On-Board, Title 5 Technician is selected for this position, their status will change to that of this appointment and they will not be returned to their permanent position

This position involves working as a member of a crew. Duties may include, but are not limited to performing roadway maintenance activities; performing roadside activities; installing and replacing signs, permanent traffic control devices, and pavement markings; maintaining and repairing guardrail systems; performing structure maintenance and repair activities; performing winter maintenance; maintaining and repairing department facilities and properties; performing preventative maintenance and equipment repair; responding to emergencies and other incidents; providing on-the-job training and work direction; providing temporary traffic control through and around work zones and emergency/hazardous sites; maintaining documentation; operating and using a variety of equipment and tools; and promoting a safe work environment and participating in public safety awareness activities. From approximately May 1 to September 30, the anticipated work schedule for this position is 10-hour days, 4 days per week from Monday through Thursday each week. From approximately October 1 - April 30, the anticipated work schedule for this position is eight-hour days, Monday through Friday. Night and shift work will be required, including working weekend hours and holidays during emergencies and inclement weather. Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions and around highway traffic. Certification in one or more areas is required within the first year of employment. Further certification areas will be determined by the supervisor according to job responsibility and needs. Required certifications must be maintained for continued employment. Classes and training in the certification areas are provided through the Department of Transportation. Incumbent must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with no transmission restrictions and a N: Tank Vehicles endorsement within 60 days of your hire date to retain employment. Employee will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing. Incumbent must be willing and able to report to work for inclement weather conditions and other highway emergencies; and must be able to report to their home station within 30 minutes, under normal driving conditions, from the time of notification. According to SDCL 32-12A, applicants will be required to authorize the Department of Transportation to obtain a complete driving record. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Experience in the operation of heavy equipment/farming or ranching equipment and/or experience in heavy construction is preferred. Knowledge of: * methods, materials and techniques used to perform road maintenance activities (desirable but not required); * preventive maintenance methods such as changing oil, rotating tires and lubricating parts (desirable but not required); * basic math to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; * basic computer operation (desirable but not required). Skill to: * use and maintain a variety of hand and power tools; * operate, maintain and repair various equipment and attachments (desirable but not required); * drive and operate a manual transmission.
