Position Summary:

The Supervisor, Sterile Processing Orthopedics has responsibility for assisting the SPD/OR Orthopedic Services in planning, developing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating all aspects of these areas within SPD alongside the SPD and OR leadership. Position has supervisory responsibility of the Orthopedic functional area within SPD. This includes supervision of functional staff, and quality and educational standards for this area. Manages the delivery of quality, cost effective and accessible instrumentation and services to the Orthopedic team. Responsible for the planning, organizing, coordinating, and communicating for the Orthopedics service within the SPD department in conjunction with SPD leadership. The Supervisor, Sterile Processing Orthopedics demonstrates through practice a clear understanding of the instrumentation and supplies utilized during surgical procedures.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of the Ortho SPD techs and provides ongoing evaluation of the quality and efficiency of the orthopedic sets. Consistent collaboration with the Orthopedic SLNM in order to provide best quality possible for Orthopedic service line.

  • Instructs/Directs SPD staff on proper cleaning, prep/assembly and sterilization of Orthopedic sets.

  • Works with Instrument Tracking System Specialist and Educator to come up with ways to keep staff appraised/educated to all the changes within the Orthopedic service line instruments. Ensures that all Orthopedic instrumentation is up-to-date and accurate within the tracking system. Participates in the orientation training and assignments of new personnel through active collaboration with the technical preceptor.

  • Performs Quality audits of all Orthopedic sets to include functionality, sharpness, cleanliness and completeness and proper assembly of sets. Improving upon orthopedic efficiencies as evident by improving metrics associated with defects, first case starts and turnaround time

  • Responsible for directing the flow of all Orthopedic loaners. Making sure that loaners are delivered on a manner that is appropriate for the workflow of the department and if not, investigating the reason why so that solutions could be found.

Position Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Certification as Certified Surgical Tech (CST).

  • One year to acquire certification with certifying board for sterile processing as a CRCST or its equivalent.

  • Two years to acquire certification as a Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) or its equivalent.


  • Certified Instrumentation Specialist (CIS) certification



  • Minimum of 5 years combination of OR experience as a Surgical Technologist and SPD Tech.

  • Minimum of 3 years with specialization in Orthopedic Service Line within the OR.

  • Must demonstrate expert knowledge of instrumentation, equipment, inventory management & case cart management

  • Knowledge of sterilization standards and procedures and Central Service related medical terminology.

  • Ability to adequately use or learn to use the departments computerized system and its associated devices.

  • Proficient oral and written (English language) communication skills required in order to fulfill documentation requirements associated with the position.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in computers.

  • Must have effective interpersonal skills to work well with others.
