To describe the responsibilities of the Certifying Scientist Supervisor within the Forensic Toxicology Drug Testing Laboratory. The Certifying Scientist Supervisor is the person who will assist the Responsible Person with the day to day, around the clock, operational, scheduling and administrative leadership of the Forensic Toxicology Certifying Scientist department. The incumbent will be responsible for the leadership, management and direction of negative and positive certifying scientist personnel on multiple shifts while working alongside certifying results. The incumbent will also interact with clients and legal personnel as an expert witness representing the company as to the validity of the testing. The incumbent will also interact with other managers and supervisors to provide and/or implement mutually beneficial solutions. This position reports to the Laboratory Director and Responsible Person, Forensic Toxicology.


  • Accountable for ensuring that all the regulatory criteria are met and maintained daily within the Certifying Scientists area on a 24-hour basis as mandated by applicable federal, state and local regulations.

  • Responsible for meeting and providing unique and strategic alternatives for best practices as related to the Certifying Department.

  • Ensures that daily quality, production and scheduling measurements are in place to meet or exceed standards and goals. Additionally, will perform spot checks to ensure the standards are met.

  • Ensures that all safety and security procedures are administered and followed as mandated by HHS, OSHA and SOP for the Certifying Department.

  • Ensures that all direct reports are adequately trained as required by the SOP. Additionally, ensures that training is reviewed and continuing education is performed.

  • Lead, supervise and manage staff. Will hold staff accountable for their specific areas as prescribed by governing bodies, compliance programs, job descriptions, HHS, SOP, quality and production standards, safety and security policies and best practices.

  • Ensures that all certifying is performed accurately including releasing, resulting, calibrations, ID list verifications, chain of custody verifications for all negative and confirmation specimens while certifying results as mandated by HHS, SAMHSA and SOP regulations. Additionally, will interact with other departmental staff to ensure data quality and validity.

  • Will act as an expert legal witness testifying in court as to the validity and accuracy of testing. May involve court appearances.

  • May act as an "Alternate Responsible Person" as outlined by SAMHSA regulations. Additionally, will have knowledge of all areas in the Forensic Laboratory.

  • Ensures that staff is compensated accurately and regularly by monitoring and editing payroll data. Acts as a liaison between staff and payroll department.

  • Ensures that staff is reviewed informally and formally regularly for performance. Provides coaching, as needed.

  • Will be held accountable to the laboratory "Responsible Person" and partners with other managers, supervisors and staff to help transform problems into opportunities for a "win- win" situation for customers, staff and the company.

  • Communicates information above, across and down proper channels by attending or participating in meetings or training as required or needed. Additionally, communicates information by oral or written reports as required or needed.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Responsible Person.


  • Bachelor's degree in Toxicology, Chemical, Biological or related discipline.

  • 6+ years of forensic toxicology experience or equivalent, including a minimum of one year as a positive certifying scientist in a DHHS certified laboratory.

  • Detailed knowledge of laboratory SOPs and testing technologies.

  • Detailed knowledge of applicable workplace drug testing Federal and state regulations.

  • Strong communication and leadership skills.

  • Training and experience in performing laboratory testing, maintenance of chain of custody, and understanding proper remedial action in response to problems with equipment or procedures.

  • Commitment to Customer Satisfaction and Quality processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt as needs of the business change.

  • Documented court testimony experience.

This position reports to the Certifying Scientist Supervisor and Responsible Person.
