Summary:

The role of the Support Service/Recycling Specialist within the Facilities Management is to ensure the success of the campus support services and waste and recycling program. This includes collection of recycling, compost, and waste throughout campus and depositing these materials in the proper locations on campus. This includes performing small office moves and configurations, to ensure minimum office disruptions. Other duties include, but are not limited to, performing campus clean-up activities such as litter pickup, power washing, street sweeping, all setups for university functions, to ensure university standards are upheld; and the storage, redistribution, reuse and/or recycle of durable goods including furniture and technical equipment, to ensure security of university inventory and proper redistribution, based on departmental needs, snow and ice removal, parking garage cleaning, and operating equipment in order to ensure the cleanliness of campus.

Essential Functions:

  • Removes waste and recycling daily from designated buildings sites and outdoor receptacles and disposes of refuse into central locations and specified dumpsters. Supports campus events by providing waste and recycling services. Ensures that campus is clean by sweeping sidewalks, cleans courtyards, collecting litter and walkways using hand or power equipment. Wash hard surface areas such as garages, roadways, trash containers, walkways, etc. This includes both manual washing as well as power washing. Other cleaning and maintenance duties as assigned. Aid in performing intercampus moves and supporting campus events with the Recycling Associate and Support Services Crew, including moving furniture and setting out tables and chairs for campus events. Performs setups of tables and chairs for various university meetings on and off campus, to support university functions. performs light office moves, to ensure minimal office disruptions. Assists with furniture inventory and replaces broken furniture in classrooms throughout the campus, to ensure university community's needs are met. Assists and arranges for the storage of unwanted and unused furniture for later distribution, to ensure security of inventory and redistribution based on university priorities.

  • Serve as essential staff for emergency weather events and participates in the winter weather snow removal team. Performs snow and ice removal and applies deicing materials. Available for weekend and overtime work as scheduled or needed for snow removal and other assigned work.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 1 year of recycling or waste management, exterior cleaning, landscaping, or construction experience.

  • Valid and clean driver's license.

  • Knowledge of work methods, equipment, and procedures to assure health and safety standards and precautions are applied to work performed.

  • Ability to read, interpret, follow written orders, and carry out verbal instructions.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent. Course work in sustainability or environmental management.

  • Experience with recycling, composting, and landfill diversion operations.

  • Experience working with students.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-time

  • 40 hours/week

Salary Range:

  • $23.11 - $27.73/hour

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Experience in coordinating recycling or property programs.

  • Ability to obtain authorization to operate a university vehicle.

  • Strong knowledge of recycling practices, standards, and operations.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. and capacity to work in seasonal weather conditions.

  • Self-direction and attention to detail.
