Supplier Development Engineer Special Processes
SpaceX demands a new type of supply chain. We require our suppliers to provide premium quality with rapidly evolving designs at increasingly ambitious volumes. We are actively looking for candidates who possess comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing and quality tools and have unrelenting motivation to enable suppliers for success.
This is a highly technical position that requires practical experience with the special processes and coatings used in rockets and rocket engines to break through technical hurtles in our supply base. The ideal candidate will have a broad understanding of these processes with the desire and capability to take on new challenges in unfamiliar areas to help enable our mission to Mars.
Provide program leadership necessary to integrate the engineering, production, planning, manufacturing, and procurement groups to assure product quality, delivery and cost achieve business and customer expectations
Develop positive relationships and work closely with sourcing leaders to manage, implement and track supplier and/or engineering design changes, capacity studies, new product introductions and outsourcing
Interface with component teams to prioritize supplier development needs by component to improve cost competitiveness and supply constraints
Research external market information and entrepreneurial companies to identify potential new sources and suppliers
Review and assess supplier manufacturing processes and quality systems. Provide feedback as appropriate on manufacturing methods and technologies. Manage supplier improvement plans
Drive supplier selection through robust qualification processes; Implement and monitor production part approval process with selected suppliers
Assure supplier understanding of product and submission requirements
Develop and approve process controls to control critical characteristics
Recommend technical product improvements to reduce risk and potential defect opportunities
Improve quality performance of suppliers by conducting workshops at supplier locations, providing technical assistance in developing a quality system, or other technical support as required
Function as liaison between purchasing, engineering, manufacturing and suppliers to resolve supplier quality issues and to provide technical support
Demonstrate innovation, technical excellence, attention to detail, self-direction and courage
Drive for results and customer satisfaction
Collaborate with teams, lead projects, and continuously drive improvement in the supply base
Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science & engineering or other related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a raw materials or special processes manufacturing and/or process engineering role
Preferred Skills and Experiences:
Master's degree in engineering or business
Experience in special processes such as thin film coatings, thermal spray coatings, chemical processing, plating, thermal protection systems
Competence interpreting 2D engineering drawings and model drawings
Knowledge of supplier quality processes
Experience with quality systems (ISO 9000/TS/AS9100)
Disciplined approach to problem solving - 8D
Proficiency in MS Office applications and report writing
Knowledge of lean concepts
Experience with sharing information and influencing others
Knowledge of statistical techniques and methods (like design of experiments, Six Sigma, etc.)
Experience with MRP or ERP systems
Position may require long hours and some nights and weekends
Ability to travel - up to 60% work week travel is required, valid driver's license mandatory
