Supplier Development Engineer

PCB/PCBA (Starlink Product)

Starlink demands a new type of supply chain. We require our suppliers to provide premium quality with rapidly evolving designs at commercial scale volumes. We are actively looking for candidates who possess comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing and quality tools and have unrelenting motivation to enable suppliers for success. This position requires a combination of proven leadership and technical capabilities.

This is a technical position that requires practical experience in the area of specialty with the materials, processes and parts used in printed circuit boards and assemblies (PCB/PCBA). The ideal candidate will have broad understanding of these products with the desire and capability to take on new challenges in unfamiliar areas to help enable our mission to Mars.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Act as the technical point of contact for assigned parts, solving emergent challenges at suppliers and mitigating risk to the manufacturing system by addressing high-impact manufacturing and quality challenges
Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews to ensure parts are manufacturable; initiate engineering drawing changes as appropriate
Own the "Production Part Approval Process" or PPAP for your assigned hardware and suppliers
Review non-conformances on assigned parts and solve to the root cause, implementing systemic changes at the supplier, at SpaceX, or both
Lead Containment activities on assigned parts, working with cross-functional counterparts to agree on scope, path forward and ultimate resolution
Identify, audit and onboard new suppliers; perform surveillance and diagnostic audits on incumbent suppliers
Lead supplier probation activities for underperforming suppliers
Provide guidance to Procurement in placing orders at the right suppliers
Industrialize new materials and/or processes by collaborating with suppliers to implement the required capital improvements and developing their capability to scale-up these new technologies
Demonstrate innovation, technical excellence, attention to detail, self-direction and courage
Drive for results and customer satisfaction by collaborating with teams, leading projects and continuously driving improvement in the supply base

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university
1+ years of experience working with PCB (printed circuit boards) or PCBA (printed circuit board assemblies)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in materials science & engineering
Master's degree in engineering or business
Experience with high volume manufacturing
Knowledge of supplier quality processes (Production Part Approval Process, Advanced Product Quality Planning, First Article Inspection Reports, etc.)
Knowledge of statistical techniques and methods, e.g., design of experiments, Six Sigma, etc.
Experience with Quality Systems (ISO 9000/TS/AS9100/NADCAP).
Disciplined approach to problem solving

Proficient in MS Office applications and report writing
Knowledge of lean concepts
Experience with sharing information and influencing others across organizational lines, internally and externally
Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to make presentations to suppliers, team members and management
Experience with MRP or ERP systems

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position may require long hours and some nights and weekends
Ability to travel: Up to 25-60% work week travel is required, valid driver's license mandatory.

TURBOMACHINERY DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER Oversee all aspects of turbopump design, development, and qualification and production support. In this role, you will utilize your strong technical knowledge of the turbomachinery and the full engine system, as well as your ability to work with a wider team of specialists in the various sub systems of the pump. You will ensure that turbopumps are developed in a manner so as to enable aggressive manufacturing goals, minimum cost/weight, and delivery on an aggressive schedule. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Design, build, test and support turbopumps for SpaceX's line of liquid fueled rocket engines * Support the production and flight operations for ensuring it is successful in all aspects or take ownership of one of the critical sub systems * Review and/or update detailed mechanical analysis on all the turbopump components/systems, and confirm that they meet the required standards for life and reliability targets * Work with other engineers to ensure rotordynamics/bearings and other mechanical elements (seals etc.) are correctly defined and implemented, or perform analysis as needed * Work with designers to support accurate and correct models and drawings for turbopump assembly and components, and ensure that these drawings are correct and able to be manufactured with the available processes (or develop process to enable them) * Ensure that detailed layouts and stack-ups are up to date and ensure all the correct build clearances and fits are set such that the turbopump can be assembled and run correctly * Work with manufacturing engineers to ensure turbo pump and key sub-assemblies are manufactured correctly and efficiently * Work with teams developing other systems on the engine (combustion devices, valves, etc.) to ensure that the turbo pump design is optimally integrated and that risks are minimized across the engine * Support both component and assembly testing of the turbopump * Help define the test configuration, test process/execution, and review the results * Lead the resolution of issues encountered with the turbopump during testing or flight operations * Support ongoing design improvements to turbomachinery BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline * 2+ years of academic or professional experience related to turbomachinery or rocket engine development PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: * Master's degree in an engineering discipline * Background in turbomachinery design (aero/hydro, CFD, stress analysis, HCF, LCF) * Hands-on experience with turbomachinery hardware build * Experience with turbomachinery manufacturing and design for manufacturability * Experience with turbomachinery testing and engine testing * Understanding of thermodynamics, compressible and incompressible flow, thermochemistry mechanics and/or materials * Professional experience using Siemens NX (Unigraphics) and ANSYS; Fluent or other comparable CFD package also desirable * Understanding of engineering fundamentals and the ability to perform basic analysis * Great attitude in the face of extreme challenges * Experience at a nimble engineering organization or in a highly technical position that required a scrappy, entrepreneurial manner to accomplish tasks with tight time or budget constraints * Demonstrated track record of excellent academic and professional achievement * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Ability to deliver against an aggressive schedules ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * Willingness to travel in support of launching and testing of hardware * Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed to resolve critical technical or timing issues ITAR REQUIREMENTS: * To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
