Job Summary

Responsible administering oral and topical medications to patients. This individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. Also, must perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and well-being of patients. Reports to Clinical Nurse Manager.

Job Description

Supplemental CNA Medication Aide - University Place in SW Houston

  • 6a-2p or 2-10p, mostly weekends

  • Must be able to commit to 2 shifts per month minimum

  • CNA, Medication Aide & BLS required

  • Long term care experience preferred

CNA License, Certified Medication Aide, and BLS required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certified as a Medication Aide by Texas Health & Human Services required

  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services required

  • Certified in Basic Life Support required

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Two (2) years' experience in one of the following areas acute care hospital, nursing home, home hospice setting or a long term care facility, preferred

  • Ability to understand written instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations; demonstrates skills for assigned specialty area/function or assigned procedures, including a working knowledge of basic medical terminology and computer software skills

  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties with increased responsibilities

  • Ability to perform duties requiring prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provides direct patient care to patient under direction of the RN and according to the Aide Plan of Care.

  • Administers oral, inhalation and topical medications, including PRN,as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.

  • Must demonstrate knowledge of "five rights" of medication administration.

  • Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately, utilizing the computer system to enter and reference resident information as needed, according to procedures.

  • Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse on the appropriate shift.

  • Performs tasks associated with medication administration, including patient vital signs, calculate medication dosages and stock the medication cart.

  • Performs resident care responsibilities in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort consistent with MHHS Policies and Procedures as well as state/federal guidelines and regulations that optimizes resident safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

  • Practices accepted infection control principles to provide a clean, safe and comfortable environment.

  • May also perform CNA duties including:

  • Answers resident call lights, anticipates resident's needs including nutrition and makes rounds to assigned resident under the supervision of a licensed.

  • Notifies appropriate licensed staff when a resident complains of pain.

  • Takes and records vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications.

  • Assists with safe transfers and ambulation.

  • Reports and when appropriate, records any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents to the nurse.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
