Job Summary

Located in the nation's capital, The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the chief legal office of the District of Columbia. OAG enforces the District's laws, works to protect, and defend D.C. residents, and provides the highest level of independent legal advice and guidance to District of Columbia government agencies. The Civil Litigation Division of the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia is seeking a Section Chief for Section I.

The Civil Litigation Division defends the District of Columbia, including District agencies, officers, and employees, in civil lawsuits filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the U.S.

District Court for the District of Columbia seeking monetary damages, equitable remedies, and other relief.

The Section Chief will work under the supervision of CLD's Deputy Attorney General and two Assistant Deputy Attorneys General. The Section Chief will directly supervise approximately nine (9) line attorneys and three (3) support staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Ensuring proper case assignment and case transfers to and coverage by AAGs to meet court, mediation, and other schedules or deadlines.

Reviewing and approving pleadings, motions, memoranda, discovery and correspondence.

Evaluating cases for settlement purposes and authorizing or recommending settlement amounts.

Monitoring compliance of AAGs and staff with the Attorney General's Performance Contract requirements, including response to contacts within 24 hours.

Reviewing litigation outcomes and making timely recommendations where appellate review is needed.

Attending management meetings with the Deputy Attorney General and others at the Office of the Attorney General as requested, as well as attend such management and other specific meetings with District agencies, their units, or personnel as necessary or requested.

Assisting in interviewing, reviewing, evaluating, and, where necessary, disciplining AAGs and staff, in accordance with D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and OAG standards and policies.

Maintaining requisite legal, management, inter-agency, human relations, and management-labor knowledge and skills; and collecting, maintaining, and disseminating timely, accurate and up-to-date data on the Section's activities.

Qualifications and Education

Incumbent must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school at the time of appointment.

The candidate must also have considerable prior experience handling complex civil litigation, preferably to include tort, employment, constitutional, and § 1983 litigation, and excellent writing and editing skills. Prior managerial experience is preferred.

License and Certification

The incumbent must be an active member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or have the ability to waive in and be admitted within 360 days of appointment. An appointee to the Legal Supervisory Service shall remain a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar and be admitted to practice in the U.S.

District Court for the District of Columbia during his/her employment in the Legal Supervisory Service. If not currently a member of the District of the Columbia Bar, prior to appointment, the successful candidate must send proof that his/her completed District of Columbia Bar application has been submitted to the District of Columbia Bar.

Working Conditions/ Environment

Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Generally, work is sedentary, some walking, handling, and carrying of light to moderately heavy objects (such as case records, briefcases, and exhibits) is required.

Salary Range: $151,000. - $171,000.

Position Designation:
