Summary

Supervisory Social Worker (Vet Center Director) on the multidisciplinary team that is located in a community-based Vet Center that provides veterans with community outreach, counseling, therapy, treatment and direct services and referral to VA and community resources and community education regarding the problems and needs of the veteran.
Responsibilities

The Supervisory Social Worker (Vet Center Director) serves on the multidisciplinary team that is located in a community based Vet Center that provides veterans with community outreach, counseling, therapy, treatment and direct services and referral to VA and community resources and community education regarding the problems and needs of the veteran. The incumbent maintains an office in the Vet Center. Incumbent will work in cooperative collaboration with other team members and with professionals, paraprofessionals, volunteers and others in VA facilities and community agencies to help veterans recognize and resolve their problems and needs. The counseling and therapeutic services provided by the Vet Center range from routine to complex and include suicide prevention, crisis intervention, short- and long-term treatment with clients exhibiting post-traumatic stress disorder, other psychiatric disorders and/or readjustment problems. Clients encountered and problems exhibited necessitates a variety of psychological, rehabilitation, marriage and family counseling and mental health techniques including, but not limited to, individual, group, conjoint, vocational, educational, substance abuse and readjustment counseling. Incumbent must possess a high degree of clinical skill, including the
unique skills needed to work with veterans and the significant others and to supervise and to provide consultation to professionals and paraprofessionals providing clinical services. Incumbent must possess the capability to perform administrative tasks required in the community-based office of a program with a unique administrative structure and a variety of formal and informal working relationships with a wide range of VA facilities and community organizations.

  • 4:30 pm, may be required to work some evenings and weekends. Hours may vary depending on location of selection, these differences will be discussed during interviews.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship: United States Citizenship; Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website.
Education: Supervisory Social Worker: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work. Grade Determinations: Supervisory Social Workers. For supervisors, grades are determined by the scope of responsibility, the complexity of the social work services provided by supervisees, the composition of the staff supervised, (e.g. professional staff, multidisciplinary staff, tours of duty, geographical disbursement, etc.), and the amount of time spent in personnel management functions.

Experience, Education and Licensure. Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for subordinate staff to qualify for licensure.

Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. They may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Supervisory Social Worker:
Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.
Knowledge and skill in management/administration, which includes supervision, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services by supervised social workers.
Ability to provide administrative supervision and clinical supervision, including supervision for social work licensure.GS-12 Supervisory Social Worker. At the GS-12 grade, Supervisory Social Workers typically have significant personnel management responsibilities for a small to medium size professional and non-professional staff, including support staff and professional staff at the GS-11 grade level and below. They are responsible for the professional and administrative management of an area in a social work service, in a care line, or multiple facilities. They also provide direct clinical services with or without program coordination responsibilities. Preferred Experience:
Working knowledge of Veterans, Service Members and Families, particularly those with PTSD, combat stress and multiple diagnoses.
Working with and assisting military or veteran populations in support of development and readjustment.
Supervising/managing a small mental health team.
Public speaking and community networking.

The work is primarily sedentary.

It may require some lifting (10-20 lbs.) occasionally.
