Summary

This position is located in Office of Protection Services (OPS). The employee provides physical protection of museum property and grounds; enforces Smithsonian Institution rules and regulations regarding safety and protection of staff and visitors within the boundaries of the Smithsonian Institution.

Responsibilities

  • Employs authority in maintaining proper security in specified buildings and grounds during special occasions and ceremonies while enforcing concurrently with the local law enforcement authorities the laws and regulations applicable to their jurisdiction.

  • Provides administrative and technical first (1st) line supervision of subordinate security officers and gallery attendants.

  • Investigates and prepares reports of offenses and incidents involving injuries to persons or damage to property; complaints regarding the conduct of subordinate staff or any other irregularities or unusual situations which may affect the security mission of the Smithsonian Institution.

  • Conducts formations to ensure officers have pertinent information to perform the duties of the job.

Qualifications

GS-6 You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as providing protection of museum property and grounds; enforces Smithsonian Institution rules and regulations regarding safety and protection of staff and visitors.

GS-7 You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as providing protection of museum property and grounds; enforces Smithsonian Institution rules and regulations regarding safety and protection of staff and visitors, monitoring and reviewing security management systems such as access control, CCTV, mass notification, fire, and life safety..

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Investigation of Fitness: A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment.
