Job Summary

This position is in the Department of Aging and Community Living (DACL). The mission of DACL is to advocate, plan, implement, and monitor programs in health, education, and social services which promote longevity, independence, dignity, and choice for the city's older adults (ages 60 years and older), Adults with disabilities (ages 18 to 59 years), and caregivers.

The primary work of this position is to design, develop, implement, and evaluate nutrition services programs for senior residents of the District of Columbia (District) as it relates to the maintenance and improvement of overall nutrition, food insecurity, and health concerns.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reviews and implements nutrition program policies, procedures, and guidelines related to DACL nutrition programs and provides technical direction and guidance to nutritionists and program analyst; manages and evaluates all aspects of DACL nutrition services. Provides a full range of supervisory services for subordinate staff. Serves as nutrition expert to other DACL units on programmatic issues and collaborates with other health professionals to develop strategies to address nutrition issues related to the District's senior population.

Manages the distribution of educational information to the senior residents through health promotion materials, individual assessments, etc. Provides nutritional guidance and/or training to staff, seniors and/or grantees as needed; evaluates services provided.

Reviews and approves educational materials to assure that the needs of special populations are met. Monitors and assesses vendor services/food distribution and grantees performance and program development. Anticipates changes in service needs, shifting nutritional demands, and health trends. Identifies and implements new services and processes to fully establish DACL's nutrition program.

Qualifications and Education:

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S.

Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (external link) (formerly American Dietetic Association (external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.

  • Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.

  • Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

In addition: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade in the normal line of progression. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and include work directly related to providing professional dietetic and/or nutrition work.

Prior supervisory/management experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Must be a Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist in Washington, DC, or a Registered Dietitian eligible to obtain licensure in DC within months of employment.

A valid driver's license is required.

Work Conditions/Environment

Work is usually performed in an office setting; however, on-site visits are also required and may include private homes and apartments, offices, institutions, potential housing, meetings with providers, and professional training sites. The work also requires incumbent to drive to sites/visits and walking in the community.

Promotion Potential: No known promotion potential.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not in the collective bargaining unit.

Duration of Appointment: Management Supervisory Service (MSS): At-will employment applies to the MSS. All positions and appointments in the MSS serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Position Designation(s): The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability

  • Security Sensitive.

Emergency Destination: The incumbent is designated as an emergency employee and must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, to support the District's overall preparedness. In the event of an emergency, the incumbent may be called into work and classified as essential.

Residency Requirement: If the position you are applying for is in the Career, Management Supervisory, or Educational Service at an annual salary of one hundred fifty thousand dollars ($150,000) or more, you must establish residency in the District of Columbia within one hundred eighty (180) days of the effective date of the appointment and continue to maintain residency within the District of Columbia throughout the duration of the appointment
