Supervisory Park Ranger (Interpretation)

This position is located in Grand Canyon National Park, in the Interpretation and Education Division.

This is a temporary promotion or detail not to exceed 1 year and can be extended up to 5 years. This temporary promotion may be made permanent without further competition.The primary duty of this position is to provide leadership and direction to the interpretive program at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

The incumbent manages a complex district operation. Responsibilities include: to provide adequate training and coaching to interpretive staff; plan formal and informal interpretive operations in the district (exhibits, publications, visitor center operations, events, demonstrations, etc.); work with numerous partner organizations inside and outside the park including Grand Canyon Conservancy, volunteer programs, and the 11 associated tribes of the Grand Canyon; interacts with local offices of state and municipal entries, other Federal agencies, and special interest groups. The incumbent may participate in or influence planning outside the park.

Major Duties:

• Recruit, hire, and coach district interpretive staff, ensuring equal opportunity for all employees.

• Plan and direct permanent and seasonal interpretive personnel and activities to ensure complete coverage and optimum efficiency of the park's interpretive program.

• Supervise and evaluate work performance of employees for goal accomplishment, accuracy, interpretive quality, and safety.

• Work with the community and partner organizations in coordinating interpretive activities and assist in coordinating events and activities.

• Develops short-term and long-term planning for the division including staffing needs, program development, and special events.

Area Information:

The North Rim District is situated on the rim of the Grand Canyon amidst the vast public lands of the Arizona Strip. It is about 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the Grand Canyon or a 215 mile drive which takes approximately 4 hours.

The nearest community with full range of services is located in Kanab, UT approximately 80 miles from the North Rim. The elevation on the North Rim is about 8,200 feet and consequently the climate in the summer is mild with highs in the 80's and lows in the 50's. Between May 15 and October 15 the North Rim receives approximately 500,000 visitors.

The North Rim has a robust concession operation which features a historic full service lodge with accommodations serving around 500 visitors, 230 concession employees, a general store, post office, mule ride concession, gas station, campground, etc. Beyond the North Rim Village the district has about 20 miles of paved scenic roads, 80 miles of high clearance 4 wheel drive roads, and hundreds of miles of trails/routes including immediate access to the North Kaibab Trail/cross-canyon corridor.

Recreational opportunities include hiking, running, climbing, canyoneering, rafting, road/mountain biking, skiing, and numerous other options in nearby communities such as St. George, Utah and Page, Arizona.

Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are all within a half day drive. Employees are assigned quarters, possibly shared, in a cabin, apartment, or house.All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-05/01/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted.

An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: coordinating, managing, or directing interpretive programs; developing long range program plans; developing educational programs; managing interpretive staff or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a Ph.

D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field of study that is directly related to the work of the position, which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to do the work of this position. Directly related fields include: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.

To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together.

The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts and hours per week worked.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
