Supervisory Park Ranger (I)

This position is located at Eisenhower National Historic Site (NHS) in Gettysburg, PA. Changes in visitor access and programming contributed to an increase in visitation by more than 300% between 2022 and 2023.

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic team, expanding the narratives told here. The position is responsible for the planning, implementation, and coordination of interpretive programs for Eisenhower NHS and will work collaboratively with the Education Ranger.

• Develop and present formal and informal audience and learner-centered interpretive experiences using interpretive skills,

techniques, and tools delivered in-person and through interpretive media and technology.

• Supervise park guides and seasonal interpretive rangers.

• Coordinate the operation of a visitor facility: develop daily work schedules; monitor visitor services provided by lower graded

employees, critique these activities, and recommend improvements; and ensure visitor information materials are available.

• Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate a broad range of interpretive programs and products conducted by fellow interpreters,

critiques these activities and recommend individual or program improvements.

• Assist in coordinating special projects (e.g. special events, youth initiatives, teacher workshops, regional or national

committees) from beginning to end.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion and can involve extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines outdoors, and carrying backpacks, tools, or other loads. Employees who participate in all-risk operations will be required to meet fitness requirements on a continuing basis.

Working Conditions: The work can include moderate risks or discomforts that require safety precautions (e.g., exposure to extreme temperatures, climates, rough terrain, wild animals, pests, and/or insects). The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, boots, gloves, etc. Some employees may be engaged in all-rick operations and be exposed to high risk and potentially dangerous situation which require a range of safety and other precautions.All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-05/03/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position, Park Ranger (I), GS-0025 at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Experience at this level must include all of the following: knowledge of interpretive principles, practices, techniques, and themes to convey, connect, and facilitate shared learning experiences to in-person and virtual audiences using interpretive skills, techniques, and tools; ability to prepare and deliver structured and informal presentations to diverse audiences; ability to assist in coordinating special projects; ability to coordinate the operation of a visitor facility; and experience training, mentoring, coaching, and evaluating interpretive programs and products. Examples of specialized experience may include (but not limited to) Park Guide; education technician; education specialist; history, museum, and/or cultural resources educator or teacher; Park Ranger (Interpretation) and/or similar work.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or a mater's or equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation in a directly-related field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified above may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in this position.

Successful completion of a Combination of Education and Experience as described above. To combine education and experience first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months.

Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
