What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a time limited assignment not-to-exceed 1 year, that may be extended within regulatory time limits or made permanent without further competition or terminated at management discretion. At the end of the assignment, you will be returned to a position equivalent in tenure and grade as your former position.

Boulder City, NV - $88,756 (step 01) to $115,379 (step 10)

Carson City, NV - $96,148 (step 01) to $124,988 (step 10)

As a Supervisory Hydrologic Technician within the Nevada Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Supervises employees involving the collection, computation, and analysis of water data, which includes surface water, focusing on groundwater, sediment, and water-quality data.

  • Assists the Supervisory Hydrologist for Hydrologic Networks in setting plans and priorities for the Science Center Data Program and executing Water Mission Area technical and safety policies.

  • Plans and schedules the collection and computation and the construction, installation, and maintenance of stations and equipment.

  • Provides pertinent water resources information to Federal, State, local, and Tribal agencies and the general public.

  • Assigns, directs, and reviews the work of lower graded technicians in the Field Unit.

  • Develops field unit funding estimates and human resources plans for accomplishing work and managing the overall field unit operations and budgets.

  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands: Field work is physically active and may include climbing rocky and steep terrain, wading streams, and lifting equipment weighing up to 50 pounds or more. Field work also involves moderate risks such as measuring from highway bridges, in swift streams, and from boats or cableways.

Work Environment: Exposure to extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, extreme temperatures, etc., and hazards such as flooding, ice, and insect bites, are common for field work. Special safety precautions are required in many cases, and incumbent typically wears a life jacket, reflective rain gear, safety glasses, etc. Field areas are often isolated and occasionally difficult to reach.

Conditions of Employment as required by the USGS Watercraft Safety Program: Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification for the duration of employment.

Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience may include: planning and conducting the computation and collection of data from approximately thirty or more gaging stations; determining stage-discharge relations, computing rating tables and mean daily, monthly and annual discharge rates from these stations. Obtaining hydrologic data from published and unpublished sources and conducting hydrologic studies relative to the frequency of flood and droughts. Planning and coordinating a ground water survey program for an area that may be either a small area with complex features or a larger area with planning and coordinating problems related to the scope of the ground water survey operations. Planning and coordinating a water quality program to include sampling and/or continuous water quality measurements for complex parameters such as turbidity for an area that may be either a small area with complex features or a larger area with planning and coordinating problems related to the scope of the water quality operations.
