This position serves as a first line supervisor on a Fire Engine Module and is responsible for performing wildland firefighting work and to supervise crews performing such work. These crews perform work directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, and hazardous fuels reduction.

The duty station for this position will be one of the duty locations listed in this announcement. Final determination of duty station will be made by the selecting official at the time of job offer.

Provides technical and administrative supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit.
Directs the operation of a wildland fire engine, ensuring the correct positioning, proper use and operation. Personally performs and directs other in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump values, laying hose and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effect use of water and additives. Makes initial evaluation of fire situation and determines suppression method to use, determines rate of spread, potential hazards to property and other improvements, hose lays, deployment of crew, point of initial attack, type of tools to use and application of water.
Assists in the preparation of hazardous fuels treatment plans and burn plans based on predicted fire behavior and risk assessment. May assist in forestry/range research efforts. Collects fire data for fuels management and maintains records.
Performs wildfire suppression support as directed within training and physical capabilities and other duties as assigned. Duties listed are at the full performance level.

DRUG TESTING: This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.
WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for certain Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) or Fire Program Management (FS-FPM) positions: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities.
Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS, MODERATE, or LIGHT level is a condition of employment. The arduous, moderate, or light WCT is dependent on the incumbent's NWCG (National Wildfire Coordinating Group) incident management qualifications required for their IFPM or FS-FPM position. This announcement constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements.
This position may require the selectee to obtain or possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and therefore, is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of Transportation (DOT)/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program. Applicant tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use unless they currently occupy a TDP under the DOT/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program.
Final appointment is conditional on a negative drug test. This announcement constitutes 30 days advance notice.

The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Examples of specialized experience are: Evaluated initial fire situations to determine suppression method to use, hose lays, deployment of crew, point of initial attack, type of tools to use, and application of water.
Evaluated safety as to whether the crew and equipment needs to be relocated during initial attack on wildland fires. Communicated with dispatcher and superiors on the progress on fire situation requesting additional resources when applicable. Served as a working leader on a wildland fire engine. Directs others and provides leadership in wildland fire operations including prescribed fire.
GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level; or one year of graduate level education in a position-related field of forestry or natural resources management; or combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Examples of specialized experience are: Served as Initial Attack Incident Commander on wildland urban interface and all-hazard incidents.
Assisted with search and rescue incidents, victim recoveries, automobile accidents, and hazardous materials incidents during local responses involving multi-jurisdictional and multi-agency co-operators. Directed project work in support of ecosystem management such as prescribed fire, including development of burn plans. Performed administrative support (procurement, property mgmt., etc.) and human resource management functions relative to a wildland fire crew.
This position has been identified as High or Moderate or Low Complexity under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) or Forest Service Fire Program Management (FS-FPM) and is subject to selective placement factor requirements contained in the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard and Guide when filling this vacancy. IFPM or FS-FPM selective placement factors are made up of a primary and secondary National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) core Incident Management Qualifications and Required Training. The applicant must possess these qualifications at the applicable complexity level to be considered eligible for this position.

Successfully completed and maintained currency for the Primary NWCG Core Requirement of Engine Boss (ENGB).
Successfully completed the Secondary NWCG Core Requirement of Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5).

Currency Requirement: Required to maintain currency once hired into the position. Currency of NWCG qualifications is not required for selection.
If not currently qualified, the applicant must provide documented evidence that they have been fully qualified in the past, and are able to regain currency within one year of being hired. Failure to provide this documentation will result in disqualification.
