As a Supervisory Forestry Technician (Fire) Supervisory Wildland Firefighter (Engine Captain) you will:
Serve as a supervisory wildland firefighter on a wildland fire engine, performing and supervising crews performing wildland firefighting work, i.e., wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning. Directs the operation of a wildland fire engine, ensuring the correct positioning, proper use and operation.
Provide technical and administrative supervision to wildland fire engine crews. Plan work, set and adjust short term priorities, prepare schedules for completion of work, and assign work to subordinates. Implement formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations.
Responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations, ensure engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch, and accomplish emergency repairs. Will be required to use chainsaws.
Gather and consider information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior during suppression of wildland fire incidents.
50% or less - Frequent travel will be required during peak fire activity.
07 - If position is filled at a lower grade level, subsequent promotion will be processed without further competition dependent upon administrative approval and the continuing need for an actual assignment and performance of higher-level duties.

D.O.T. DRUG TESTING REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION.
This position requires possession of a Commercials Driver's License (CDL). It is a Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. If the person selected for the position does not currently occupy a CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position, he/she will be required to submit to and receive a negative test result prior to appointment. A positive drug or alcohol test result may be grounds for denying final placement into this position. In addition, the Act mandates that the incumbent will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing and that he/she may also undergo reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.
All applicants must be aware that Federal employees must obtain and maintain a favorable background investigation. A background investigation will be conducted by the employing office following acceptance of the position. Failure to obtain a favorable determination of the background investigation will result in the cancellation of the offer or will be grounds for termination.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Supervisory Fire Engine Operator, and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement; please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.
To qualify for the GS-06 grade level, 1 year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: on-the-line wildland fire experience managing resources, equipment, and tools directly related to the suppression of wildfires as a Senior Firefighter.
To qualify for the GS-07 grade level, 1 year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: on-the-line wildland fire experience leading or managing resources, equipment, and tools directly related to the suppression of wildfires as an Assistant Module leader or as an Engine Boss.
Substitution of Education for Experience:
For GS-06: 18 semester hours of graduate education which is DIRECTLY related to work of the position OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
For GS-07: 18 semester hours of graduate education which is DIRECTLY related to work of the position OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
Specialized experience and substitution of education for experience may be combined to meet the qualification requirement.

This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.
Selective Placement Factor #1:
This position is a Primary Firefighter position and is subject to a maximum entry age (MEA). The MEA is the date immediately preceding your 37th birthday. Applicants must not have reached age 37 at the time of appointment, unless proof is provided of prior Federal service in another primary covered position, or you are a preference eligible veteran.
Selective Placement Factor(s) #2:
To meet IFPM requirements for this position, you must have possessed all of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position (currency not required):
A) Engine Boss (ENCG), AND;
B) Incident Commander, Type 5 (ICT5), AND;
C) Portable Pumps and Water Use (S-211).
You must meet all IFPM qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
Physical Demands: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance, and superior conditioning.
Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions.
This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements.
The MEA for this position shall not exceed age 37; unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday.
You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.
