Duties

Duties included, however, not limited to:

The incumbent is responsible for the supervision, coordination, performance, training, and technical operation of the General Diagnostic section in the Radiology Service. Incumbent supervises the General Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists (19 employees; General DRT's at GS 9 or below) and works closely with QA Specialist, PACS Administrator, radiologists, nurses, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results, and patient satisfaction. When necessary, assists the Chief Technologist with the operation of the radiology department.

Functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff.

Evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations.

Informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area.

Directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff.

Demonstrates practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment.

Ensures the effective operation of the General Diagnostic Section from a technical standpoint (i.e. planning, directing, and controlling activities and resources, people, and material) to meet the needs of the section - this includes staffing, assignments, workflow, and scheduling administration oversight.

Operates as well as oversees the operation of General Diagnostic equipment by General Diagnostic staff to assist in the treatment and diagnostic imaging plan for patients.

Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt, and inventory control.

Coordinates new product evaluation and justifies their purchase. Participates in developing specifications for new equipment requests.

Improve work methods and procedures to produce work products, recommends methods and products to reduce costs and/or increase quality and efficiency.

Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and develops the weekly/monthly schedules as well as holiday schedules and directs any reassignment of technologists necessary because of callouts or increased/decreased workload.

Plans and schedules ongoing production-oriented work on a quarterly and annual basis, or direct assignments of similar duration.

Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare

schedules for completion of work.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.

  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

GS -10 Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a supervisory radiologic technologist.

Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: The technologist functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff. The technologist evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The technologist informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area. The technologist directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

  • Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and

implement solutions that result in efficient section operation.

Ability to evaluate quality management procedures and processes.

  • Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and

productivity.

  • Skill in developing new policies and guidelines as needed.

Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.

Preferred Experience: Supervisory experienced preferred.

Physical Requirements: This position requires heavy lifting , 45 pounds and over, prolonged standing, repeated bending, transferring. stooping, stretching, walking, pushing, or pulling with and without assistance from another patient care provider or significant other. Reaching above the shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required). Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; distinguish basic colors; good hearing (aid permitted); good vision; speed in working and emotional stability. Must have the ability to Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (Lead Apron) for periods of time. A health examination must be successfully complete prior to this assignment and periodically thereafter as required by the Employee Health Clinic policy.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
