Duties
Major duties but are not limited to:
Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt, and inventory control.
Directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff.
Prepares formal requests and recommendations for promotions, reassignments, and other status changes, or recognition of outstanding performance of assigned employees.
Hears formal grievances and resolve at the lowest level.
Responsible for yearly performance appraisals and annually reviews the functional statements and the performance standards on all employees under his/her supervision
Responsible for the training of new technologists in CT including the performance of procedures specific to that modality and organizational practices of the specific unit.
Participates in the education of ultrasound technologists as well as other technologists through departmental in-services.
Serves as the liaison between Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors. Tracks and maintains records of repair histories and vendor performance.
Evaluates new products and equipment and makes recommendations to the Service Chief concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations.
The incumbent must be aware of all CT imaging protocols required for each exam and must be able to recognize any inaccuracies.
Knowledgeable with American College of Radiology (ACR) CT Accreditation process and ACR quality assurance scanning and monitoring.
As part of Quality Assurance (QA), all acquired images must arrive in PACS with correct patient information, accession number, and image annotation to ensure timely dictation and turn-around time of CT exam reports.
Monitors and documents any failed QA caused by technologist. Documentation is for tracking purposes and address issue immediately to improve technologist performance and patient safety.
Coordinates with scheduler concerning appointment scheduling in determining the maximum number of procedures which can be performed in a designated time frame, in-order to decrease backlog, accommodate emergent examinations and facilitate efficient throughput.
Confers with radiologists to determine standard requirements for performance of a wide variety of exams and procedures.
Participates in training CT students so that they acquire an understanding of the principals of radiation safety, proper positioning, scanning parameter selection, protocol building or adjustments, and its relationship on how CT images are acquired and generated.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable].Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.]
Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-11. Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent functions as section supervisor for a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below, which may include support staff. The incumbent evaluates new products and equipment and makes recommendations to the supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The incumbent develops and maintains protocol manuals for procedures performed in the section. The incumbent is responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and policies for the section. The incumbent directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs:
Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation.
Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage section workload, quality, performance, and productivity.
Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
Ability to supervise technologists performing a wide variety of difficult radiographic exams (CT, MRI, Special Procedures, Mammography, Ultrasound).
Ability to interview and evaluate candidates for positions, evaluate subordinate performance, recommend appointments, advancements, or recommend or take appropriate disciplinary actions.
Skill in participating in organizational facility initiatives, workgroups, and/or committees.]
Preferred Experience: The incumbent functions as section supervisor for a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below, which may include support staff and as well as directs and supervises the technical and clinical service for the CT section and programs for the main hospital and CBOC satellite clinics in the surrounding communities. The incumbent develops and maintains protocol manuals for procedures performed in the section and is responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and policies for the section. The services provided have a significant impact on direct patient care and other multi-mission organizational units' ability to provide critical patient support. The incumbent's ability to identify and implement methods to improve efficiency and effectiveness in performing services, and how it affects the overall operational services in providing great care to Veterans, their families, and the community. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Incumbent assumes full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinate technicians. Typically, these duties include assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; reviewing and making recommendations regarding new and emerging procedures; providing instruction and training to new staff; interviewing candidates for positions; recommending selections, advancements, promotions; evaluating performance; taking disciplinary action when necessary; and identifying educational or training needs.

Physical Requirements: Physical demands are usually moderate: Lifting objects up to 40 pounds, moving specialized equipment and assisting patients from gurney or wheelchair to a procedure or scan table. Occasionally, the technician assists with moving large patients, but this is done with the assistance of other personnel, or the use of patient lifts, or other safe patient handling equipment to minimize danger to employee and the patient.
