Duties

Summary

ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION: Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Indian Health Service (IHS), Northern Plains Region, Great Plains Area, PHS Indian Health Hospital, Rapid City, SD, Dental Department. This position reports to the Department Supervisory Dental Officer.
Responsibilities

Provides standard Dental practice/procedures by oral and radiographic examination of the oral cavity and provides diagnosis of pathological or irregular conditions; oral surgery procedures as extraction or impacted tooth; and performs root canal therapy on the anterior teeth of both children and adults.
Provides difficult dental practices/procedures by removing unerupted and impacted teeth, residual root tips, and teeth with exposed roots. Removes localized foreign bodies; plans and executes community dental health programs for oral disease prevention and patient education.
Ensures that department expenditures, supplies and equipment are within allocated budget; ensures compliance with JCAHO or other accreditation requirements; and provides professional dental administrative activities for assessing planning and developing for dental services.
Provides supervision to dental staff by assigning and evaluating work, interviews employees for positions, recommends appointment promotion or reassignment, resolve employee complaints, effects minor disciplinary measures such as warnings and reprimands, and identifies training needs.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Position subject to alternative work schedule, rotating shifts and nights/weekends/holidays.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

EDUCATION: Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

LICENSURE: Passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) AND possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants MUST be able to distinguish shades of color.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

Completion a 2-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science.
OR
In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements, I have one full year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and or training to provide professional dental care in connection with the diagnostic treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
