Duties

Under the supervision of the Captain, serves as a shift supervisor in the Correctional Services department, giving supervision and guidance to a subordinate staff of correctional officers involving work performance, interpretation of policy, handling of problems concerning the inmate population.

Shares responsibility in the supervision of other correctional staff and effectively maintains the security of the institution. In emergency situations, takes prompt and decisive action to determine the nature and cause of the emergency.

Authorizes changes in institutional operations when necessary to meet emergency situations.

Responsible for implementing post orders, investigates tort claims and drafts responses for administrative remedies.

Investigates reported violations of prohibited acts, (i.e. assaults, escapes, introduction of contraband, disturbances or other illicit activities), taking appropriate actions as dictated by the seriousness of the violation.

Participates in and conducts regularly scheduled instruction and training classes relating to correctional procedures and techniques and makes appropriate recommendations for training based upon assessments of needs by the incumbent.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

Education:

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

Experience:

You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the qualifications necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

  • Experience working more responsible posts, such as Control Center, Front/Rear Gate, and Visiting Room.

  • Experience providing training and guidance to lower-graded officers.

  • Experience and knowledge of BOP regulations and policies.

  • Experience initiating/participating in searching of inmates, inmate housing units and inmate working area to prevent introduction of contraband.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

This position IS NOT included in the bargaining unit.

In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307, a maximum entry age of 36 has been established for initial appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution.

The representative rate for this position is $65,962 per annum ($31.61 per hour).

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

Initial appointment to a supervisory/managerial position requires a one-year probationary period.

The incumbent is subject to geographic relocation to meet the needs of the agency.

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.

All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.

Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
