Responsibilities and Qualifications

Overview:

Organizes and administers nursing service in the assigned specialty area by assisting in the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of operations and patient care. Functions in staff role as needed. Assumes managerial duties as delegated by OR Manager. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in all aspects of the position. Responsible for the orientation of new coworkers and permanent team members in conjunction with the Resource Coordinator and the OR Nurse Clinician. Supports the continuous improvement of quality and service to ensure Mercy's goal of excellence in clinical outcomes and satisfaction of those we serve. Demonstrates fairness, integrity and compassion in interactions.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in supervision of Operating Room functioning by organizing and coordinating daily caseload, assuring minimal delays, and clinically assisting in roomswhere needed.

  • Acts as liaison for specialty to all shifts with communication and training assistance.

  • Develops and nurtures effective work relationships and communication style with physicians, staff, students, and other departments.

  • Directs and supervises patient care in specialty according to policy and procedure.

  • Works with other departments in OR and the Medical Center to maintain organizationalneeds of specialty, and participates in unit Quality Improvement activities.

  • Assists in setting of department goals and objectives. Acts as liaison between family and surgeon during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.

  • Performs duties of staff nurse as needed, due to acuity level and department census.

  • Participates in interviewing, selection, and orientation of personnel. Maintainsanecdotal records of employee activities and attendance records.

  • Provides for performance evaluations and counselings of designated personnel; recommends promotions, transfers, or discharges.

  • Assists in the development of individual staffmembers through proper education of workers in specialty needs, and the documentation of competency for each employee.

  • Conducts staff meetings to communicate and share information pertinent to departmental and specialtyfunctioning.

  • Provides time for personnel to attend inservice education programs.

  • Coordinates lectures/inservices as needed with physicians and staff.

  • Assists in organizing and scheduling work assignments both on a daily and monthly basis.

  • Provides and controls materials needed for specialty using all available resources.

  • Assures other specialty staff members are able to assist with these duties.

  • Maintains knowledge of special procedures. Maintains knowledge of equipment, including its care and function, instrumentation, etc. in conjunction with InstrumentRoom personnel.

  • Plans and executes fiscal budget for operational and capital expenses.

  • Operational budget includes weekly inventories, ordering of supplies and investigation of newequipment and supplies.

  • Participates in nursing and Medical Center committees as needed.

  • Attends workshopsand inservice programs.

Qualifications:

Education: One to three years technical school or college required in Nursing.Licensure: AND, must have either a current RN Temporary Permit/RN license in the State of Missouri.Experience: Minimum of 3 years OR RN experience.Certifications: CPR required.Preferred Education: BSN preferred.Preferred Experience: Proven leadership skills preferred.Preferred Certifications: CNOR preferred.
