This is a role for an individual with the technical background and experience to implement mature, industry-standard processes successfully, willfully, and enthusiastically, with an approach backed up by aptitude as well as knowledge. Must be a leader by doing, a leader by teaching, and a leader by serving. Requires a strong desire for ownership of responsibilities, and the ability to liaise with engineers, welders, and other crafts to successfully complete tasks correctly and on time, with often partial or incomplete guidance. Must be technically stellar with respect to welding and all things welding process related. Must understand and be able to speak to weld inspection methods and weld process development. Absolutely must understand the importance of being the example. Expected to lead roughly half of a welding organization in the day-to-day tasking and logistic troubleshooting for one to two large projects, and several smaller jobs. Must have an understanding of how welding process ties into the larger fabrication process with machining, measurement, inspection, and installation and be able to speak intelligently to the impact on schedules and cost. Ability to recognize failures or deficiencies in subordinates and foster the necessary change to bring about success.
Develop and evaluate welding procedures in conjunction with the quality team
Implement and maintain welder qualifications
Assist with the tooling and fixturing designs required for weld operation
General welding, cutting, and fabrication equipment knowledge, theory, application, maintenance, and testing
Control of production weld quality
Application of welding codes and standards
Personnel management and supervision, including mentorship of junior welders
Enforce site and personnel safety
Review and edit documentation, including work reports and record keeping
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
10+ years of professional experience in flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) on structural and pipe applications (both in a shop and field environment)
Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) experience
Aluminum gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) experience
10+ years of professional experience in metal fabrication
5+ years of experience in a supervisory role
Experience managing more than 10 employees
Ability to interpret drawings and weld symbols per AWS A2.4
Knowledge of AWS D1.1, D1.2, and D1.6
Understanding of the philosophy and technical aspects of LEAN manufacturing
Physical effort with climbing up and down stairs regularly throughout the day
Physical effort with some handling of light weight supplies or materials (up to 25lbs unassisted)
Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
Must be available to work extended hours and weekends when needed based on site operational needs; flexibility required
