SUPERVISOR, WELDING

This is a role for an individual with the technical background and experience to implement mature, industry-standard processes successfully, willfully, and enthusiastically, with an approach backed up by aptitude as well as knowledge. Must be a leader by doing, a leader by teaching, and a leader by serving. Requires a strong desire for ownership of responsibilities, and the ability to liaise with engineers, welders, and other crafts to successfully complete tasks correctly and on time, with often partial or incomplete guidance. Must be technically stellar with respect to welding and all things welding process related. Must understand and be able to speak to weld inspection methods and weld process development. Absolutely must understand the importance of being the example. Expected to lead roughly half of a welding organization in the day-to-day tasking and logistic troubleshooting for one to two large projects, and several smaller jobs. Must have an understanding of how welding process ties into the larger fabrication process with machining, measurement, inspection, and installation and be able to speak intelligently to the impact on schedules and cost. Ability to recognize failures or deficiencies in subordinates and foster the necessary change to bring about success.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and evaluate welding procedures in conjunction with the quality team

  • Implement and maintain welder qualifications

  • Assist with the tooling and fixturing designs required for weld operation

  • General welding, cutting, and fabrication equipment knowledge, theory, application, maintenance, and testing

  • Control of production weld quality

  • Application of welding codes and standards

  • Personnel management and supervision, including mentorship of junior welders

  • Enforce site and personnel safety

  • Review and edit documentation, including work reports and record keeping

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of professional experience in flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW)
  • 5+ years of professional experience in metal fabrication
  • 1+ years of experience in a supervisory role

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 10+ years of professional experience in flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) on structural and pipe applications (both in a shop and field environment)

  • Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) experience

  • Aluminum gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) experience

  • 10+ years of professional experience in metal fabrication

  • 5+ years of experience in a supervisory role

  • Experience managing more than 10 employees

  • Ability to interpret drawings and weld symbols per AWS A2.4

  • Knowledge of AWS D1.1, D1.2, and D1.6

  • Understanding of the philosophy and technical aspects of LEAN manufacturing

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical effort with climbing up and down stairs regularly throughout the day

  • Physical effort with some handling of light weight supplies or materials (up to 25lbs unassisted)

  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise

  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends when needed based on site operational needs; flexibility required

Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars WELDING INSPECTOR SPECIALIST RESPONSIBILITIES: * Perform internal and external inspections to determine if a weldment meets the acceptance criteria of a specific code, standard, or document. * Have the ability to properly interpret Codes and Specifications in accordance with the drawing requirements * Use a computer to compile and submit data of acceptance or rejection of weld quality, as well as for inter-office communications * Pay attention to detail and be capable of recommending and approving repairs as well as performing visual inspection of completed work. * Complete welding procedures and welder qualification documentation * Apply industry standards or internal requirements to inspections, as directed and based on site needs * Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: * High school diploma or GED * American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) level II certifications in magnetic-particle (MT) and visual testing (VT) * 5+ years of experience in weld inspection PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: * Extensive knowledge of industry standards including American Welding Society (AWS) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers(ASME) * CWI certification * American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) level II certifications in ultrasonic (UT) * Working knowledge of nondestructive examination (NDE) methodologies and ultrasonic testing (UT) inspections * 3-5 years preferred, in the use of oxy acetylene, fitting, arc gouging and electronic welding equipment related to the trade * General mechanical skills in concrete, machining, and alignment/setting * Knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements * Knowledge in standard tools, materials, motions, and practices of the welding trade * Knowledge in ferrous and non-ferrous metals in relating to welding and brazing * Knowledge in occupational hazards and effective safety precautions of the trade * Knowledge in arc air procedures and equipment * Use of precision measuring instruments * Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment * Familiarity with various aerospace materials, such as, Aluminum (6061 and 2219), various grades of stainless steel, Inconel, copper, titanium,monel, etc. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * Must be willing to travel extensively to remote sites for initial build and upgrades.
