Position Summary:

The Supervisor, Ultrasound oversees the day-to-day activities of the Ultrasound area.

The Supervisor is responsible for the operation of diagnostic ultrasound equipment for the performance of all dynamic ultrasound imaging procedures at a technical level not requiring direct supervision.

Major Responsibilities:

Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.

Recommends and assists in managing budgets for the areas managed.

Coordinates the assignment of tasks for the efficient utilization of available resources.

Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation.

Obtains scans per physician orders in an efficient, timely manner, according to departmental policy and procedures.

Prepares, utilizes and operates ultrasound equipment, supplies and rooms according to departmental policies and procedures.

Follows sterile techniques according to hospital policy.

Checks equipment for proper functioning prior to patient examination.

Greets patients politely and efficiently.

Clearly explains procedures to patients in English and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan.

Seeks out Interpreter Services if needed.

Gathers and records patient history. Assesses patient's ability to withstand procedure.

Obtains, reviews and completes patient consent forms prior to starting procedures.

Perform sonographic examinations using equipment and techniques specific to the modality, anatomy, pathology, physiology and area of interest requested. Positions patient on examining table to ensure a quality diagnostic image is produced.

Monitors video display of area being scanned and adjusts density or contrast to improve picture quality.

Reviews and evaluates images or computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.

Dates, labels and marks images accurately and sends to PACS according to departmental policy.

Records, processes and maintains patient data.

Presents cases to a radiologist for review.

Follows all Quality Control policies and procedures for compliance with departmental, local, state and federal regulations.

Collaborates with other medical team and administrative staff members, such as physicians and nurses, to conduct special procedures or complete administrative duties.

Arranges for scheduled maintenance and minor emergency repairs on ultrasound equipment, or informs manager of problems with equipment or supplies.

Performs all duties with strict adherence to and compliance with government regulations, hospital policies and procedures, and safety guidelines.

Responsible for overseeing that all staff credentials are up to date. Maintains documentation for continuing education credits, CPR and other training, registration and licensure.

Rotates through call schedule as required.

Meets established productivity standards.

Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.

Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.

Position Qualifications:

  • Ability to direct, lead and motivate staff.

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, basic principles of diagnostic medical ultrasound, patient care and preparation, legal and ethical aspects of ultrasonographic practice, departmental protocols, and diagnostic protocols.

  • Outstanding oral communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to explain procedures and results to patients while keeping them safe, relaxed and comfortable.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed written notes for charts and other documentation.

  • Strong mathematical and scientific skills to analyze information.

  • Ability to operate ultrasound scanning equipment and probes.

  • Ability to follow procedures and policies.

  • Ability to process, review and evaluate images or computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.

  • Ability to record, process and maintain detailed and accurate patient data, and medical histories. Prepares all documentation in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work effectively collaborate with medical staff, personnel, students, and patients.

  • Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.

EDUCATION:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Completion of and graduation from a formal ultrasound technology program in an AMA-approved school.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 4 years clinical ultrasound experience plus lead or supervisory experience.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC. :

Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or eligible. Must be CPR certified and keep certification current

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

GENERAL SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Follows established procedures to perform all lab tests (including all levels of complexity as defined by CLIA) to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. * Employee will be cross-trained and competent to perform in multiple areas / disciplines of the lab. Employee seeks out areas that need assistance when the volume of testing in their assigned area is minimal or tasks are completed. * Assesses acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintains integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process. * Performs set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Documents all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner. * Operates all laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure accurate patient test results. * Performs basic troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas. * Performs calibration procedures on instrumentation per departmental procedures in an accurate and timely manner. * Adheres to the established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data. * Informs the appropriate supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results. * Recognizes critical and /or life threatening results and notifies the appropriate clinical personnel per hospital policy. * Assists with the resolution of procedural problems encountered in the daily workload; notifies the supervisor of unusual or recurring problems. Appropriately documents all actions taken. * Maintains all records and documentation needed to comply with JCAHO, CAP, AABB, Medicare, Medicaid, and HealthAlliance laboratory regulations. * Assist in the orientation and instruction of new employees and students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures. * May assist supervisor in preparation for Department and Laboratory wide inspections. * Completes all competencies, proficiency testing, required education / reading and annual paperwork in a timely manner. Participates in appropriate role in disaster, fire drills, fires and other emergency situations. * Participates in annual HIPAA training requirements and maintains confidentiality of all personal health information (PHI). * Communicates in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family and visitors in accordance with the CARES Hospital Service Excellence Standards. * Obtain and process specimens from patients as required using established techniques. * May assist the lab supervisor in the institution of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques. * Maintains work areas in a clean, safe and organized manner. * Assist with maintaining sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties. JOB REQUIREMENTS JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Requires professional knowledge of medical technology principals and methodologies sufficient to perform clinical laboratory procedures. Requires the ability to endure periods of heavy workload and stress. Requires the ability to accept constructive feedback and initiate appropriate actions to correct situations. Must possess ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed. Requires the ability to use computer based systems to record, tract, review, and interpret test results. EDUCATION: An associate degree from a regionally accredited college / university in clinical laboratory science and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Technician program or equivalent is required. EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience is preferred by not mandatory. May hire as Medical Technologist, depending upon experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC. : Certification from a nationally recognized accreditation agency: NCA, ASCP or equivalent is required.
