  • JOB SUMMARY

  • Manages the safe and efficient medication distribution and clinical pharmacy activities for nursing and support departments. Develops and implements governing policies. Provides timely and appropriate medication information for patients, families, professional care givers and providers.

  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:

  • Provides drug information such as dosing, compatibilities, formulary substitutes, etc. to nursing, physicians and other health care practitioners; Assures that the quality of professional services is maintained; Maintains a positive and informative interaction with assigned nursing units; Participates in delivering in-service education programs when requested.

  • Reviews and interprets physicians' orders for appropriateness relevant to other departments i.e. drugs for diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests, etc.) ensure that overdoses / under doses have not been prescribed and that interactions, incompatibilities, or toxic compounds will not result from the combination of medications; assure that drugs are appropriately labeled, stored, and utilized according to physicians' instructions; Maintains necessary controls with respect to audited controlled drugs.

  • Supervises pre-packing of drugs and control procedures; Prepares specialized solutions for administration via intravenous route such as chemotherapy, hyper alimentation, antibiotics, etc. and ensure that the stability and sterility of these solutions is appropriate for patient consumption; Verifies the work performed supportive personnel, which includes, but is not limited to, unit-dose drug distribution policies and procedures; Arranges to obtain drugs in an emergency situation.

  • Participates in clinical programs instituted in the department such as drug level monitoring, antibiotic monitoring, pharmacokinetic consults, etc.; communicate with Coordinator - Clinical Pharmacy Services on such issues as necessary; Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the profession by participation in organization memberships; attends meetings, lectures, in-services, and seminars; reads professional journals; complies with National Standards of Continuing Education to maintain professional competency and proficiency; Participates in special studies as requested; Performs other duties as requested; Assesses own strengths and weaknesses; Pursues training, development opportunities; Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills;

  • Coordinate the drug distribution and clinical pharmacy activities for nursing and support departments with the hospital/clinics.

  • Stays current with policy and regulatory standards to provide the highest quality care and service to customers; seeks educational opportunities for personal development; makes decisions that consistently meet professional standards exercising sound judgment for implementation of patient care; mentors others in improving compliance with policies and best practice; collaborates with team members to improve and sustain performance in clinical or service quality throughout the organization.

  • Responsible for safe and efficient methods for coordination of established pharmacy policy concerning drug patient care.

  • Supervise other Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Interns in the Pharmacy location.

  • Perform evaluations on Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Interns that work in the Pharmacy location.

  • Ensure applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in a retrievable fashion.

  • Establishes productive collaborative relationship with physicians and other hospital/clinic staff.

  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum requirement:

  • Twelve months as Clinical or Retail Pharmacist

  • Acute Care experience

  • Bachelors of Science Degree from ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy

  • Licensed Pharmacist in Kentucky

  • Licensed Pharmacist in Ohio if assigned to King's Daughters of Ohio

  • Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support within first 90 days of employment

  • Functional knowledge of USP 795, USP 797, USP 800, Joint Commission regulations, and federal and state regulations

  • Certified to administer Immunizations per the laws of the Kentucky and Ohio State Boards of Pharmacy

  • Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's Degree

  • Prior supervisor experience

  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Constantly works near moving mechanical parts

  • Constantly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection.

  • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals

  • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Occasionally required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting).

  • Frequently required to walk and move about.

  • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.

  • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.

  • Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.

  • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.

  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.

  • Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

  • Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.
