Supervises and directs the daily activities and tasks associated with Radiation Protection (RP) in the Radioactive Materials Control Section. In addition, supervisory responsibilities include shift and unit operations level responsibilities. Provides leadership, technical and programmatic support and/or assistance in the administration and maintenance of the Radiation Protection Program.

Minimum Requirements:

A four-year Bachelors degree in Science, Engineering or other job-related field from an accredited college or university plus four (4) years of experience in radiation protection positions at a nuclear power plant. In lieu of bachelors degree, college coursework and/or experience in radiation protection positions at a nuclear power plant equaling six (6) years required. Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills to interface with both internal and external customers. (Meets or exceeds ANSI 3.1, 1978 4.3.2.)

Nuclear requirement: Any PVGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.

This is a condition of employment at PVGS. Roles and Responsibilities defined in Policy 1503 and implementing policy guide are applicable to all PVGS employees.

Any PVGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage. This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities.

Major Accountabilities:

  1. Establishes and continually monitors short term work priorities for the team to ensure maximum utilization of manpower and resources. Ensures adequate supervision and radiological surveillance is available for Radioactive Material Control and Shipping groups to support the operations of PVGS.
  2. Reviews operating procedures that may affect radiation safety. Monitors and assesses RP activities by direct observation and tours to identify situations in which exposure may be reduced. Controls radiation exposure for personnel working in their designated areas of authority by ensuring locations, operations, and conditions that have the potential for causing significant exposure to radiation are identified, posted, and controlled.
  3. Responsible for staffing, training, salary administration and performance management of personnel. Ensures radiation protection technicians maintain technical competence and proficiency.
  4. Supervises the collection and evaluation of information obtained from radiological monitoring activities.
  5. Oversees the daily work activities of RP technicians performing packaging and shipping activities fo rhte transportation and disposal of radioactive materials in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  6. Monitors expenditures to ensure costs are controlled within budget limitations.

Provides RP instrumentation assistance to all departments. Performs research to establish calibration methods for new devices. Provides direction and problem resolution to all personnel performing RP instrument calibrations and repairs. Reviews existing and proposed RP instrumentation procedures and provides feedback on necessary changes. Minimum Requirements: High school graduate or GED plus three (3) years basic electrical, instrumentation, electronic troubleshooting experience of which one year should be related technical training. OR, either Military experience or Associates degree in electronics or similar field plus three (3) years electronic troubleshooting experience. Knowledgeable in: electrical, electronic and mechanical theory; operating principles of RP instrumentation and calibration standards; algebra, geometry, trigonometry and physics. Experience in and understanding of applied calibration and repair principles including interpretation of electronic schematics. Successful completion of Job Qualification Cards (JQC's) or On The Job (OTJ) training in specific areas of the lab is required in order to qualify as an independent RP Instrumentation technician. Understanding of physical and relational principles behind the operation of measurement devices is important. Demonstrated skill in troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating RP instrumentation. Excellent communication, customer service, and time management skills. (Meets or exceeds ANSI/ANS (1978) 4.5.2.) EEI MASS Test Administered.
