Assist the Director of Special Services by providing administrative support to building administrators, individual special education teachers and teams.


  • Conduct observations on licensed special education teaching staff. Work with building administration to address performance issues with staff as necessary.

  • Assist with the staffing process for special services licensed and non-licensed staff.

  • Assist with program options for high needs students.

  • Interview, hire and coach special education staff.

  • Assess and implement staff development needs for all special education staff.

  • Assist with workshop sessions for licensed special education staff

  • Conduct group and individual IEP training sessions as needed

  • Conduct team-building training as needed

  • Assist in administering and reporting on grants that have been awarded to the Special Services Department

  • Collaborate with building teams on program needs during the school year

  • Coordinate extended school year services for special education students

  • Collaborate with the Teaching & Learning Department to coordinate alternate assessments to qualifying students with special needs

  • Provide leadership in meeting the needs of special education students

  • Facilitate communication between parents and IEP teams during times of conflict

  • Assist with conciliation conferences and due process mediation and hearing sessions

  • Engage in District-level leadership activities and committees

  • Manage section 504 plans as needed

  • Other duties as assigned



  • Current Minnesota teaching licensed in special education

  • Successful experience as a Special Education teacher

  • Proven leadership experience

  • Proven conflict resolution skills

  • Understanding of Minnesota special education standards

  • Proven experience with alternative assessments, accommodations, and curriculum modifications

  • Proven ability to access resources through special education funding and grants

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

  • Proficiency in routine computer functions, including the use of email and Microsoft Word

  • Prompt, regular and reliable attendance

  • Communicates with students, parents, co-workers, supervisors, and the community in a positive and responsive way that is consistently welcoming and enhances effective work relationships.

  • Demonstrates an appreciation of diversity in all interactions and job functions.


  • MN licensure as a Director of Special Education or working towards licensure

  • Graduate degree in Special Education

  • Administrative experience with a large, growing, and diverse educational organization

  • Expertise in the continuous improvement monitoring process

  • Understanding of the issues facing public education and the provision of special services

  • Demonstrated leadership in developing positive partnerships with education stakeholders and other agencies

  • Experience with recruitment, hiring, supervising, and retaining staff

  • Knowledge of section 504

  • Experience with ECSE

Salary Range: $95,688.87-$102,960.00

Eligible for an additional $.50 per hour once Highly Qualified status is achieved (2 or 4 year degree, OR 60 semester credits OR successful completion of the Para Pro which is offered by the district once a month). PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS: * Consult daily with licensed special education teacher regarding daily responsibilities. * Assist special education teacher in implementing district policies and procedures, including but not limited to emergency procedures, building orientation, confidentiality, student vulnerability, data collection, and classroom management as directed. * Assist special education students in academic areas such as reading, writing or math. This includes implementing curriculum, adapting instructional strategies and materials according to the needs of the student under the direction of a licensed teacher. * Work with students that may have learning challenges, behavioral issues, and/or need physical support. * Assist with toileting and other personal care issues. * Support licensed teacher in utilizing a variety of behavioral management techniques, including redirection and restraints if necessary, throughout the day. Supervise students during cooling off time, monitor and document behavior, and implement positive behavior support. * Accept work direction willingly, shift work assignments and accept changing and new job assignments as needed. * Collect and record student data adhering to the licensed teacher's directions and requirements. Communicates this information to licensed teacher(s) and other staff connected to that student as identified by the teacher. * Provide services to student as directed by licensed teacher in a manner that demonstrates knowledge of, and a positive respect for, the distinctions between the roles and responsibilities of the teacher, paraprofessional and other staff. * Understand and maintain boundaries and confidentiality with students, families, and staff. * Maintain a high level of fairness, confidentiality, respect and equity for all students, staff and families. * Other duties as assigned.
