Supervisor of Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master's Degree, with academic training in Special Education and Administration

  • Valid Teacher's Certificate and Supervisor's Certificate (required). Principal's Certificate and Speech Language Pathologist Certificate preferred.

  • At least five years experience in public education, part of which has involved teaching or supervising within the special education field.

  • Possesses strong organizational, communications (oral and written) human relations skills.

  • Successful completion of required criminal history check and proof of U.S. Citizenship or legal resident alien status.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO:

Director of Special Services

JOB GOAL:

Supervise instructional staff as assigned. Provide leadership in the development, implementation and coordination of special education programs within the district.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and supervise the implementation of all special education programs within the district (Pre-School Disabled, K-8 inclusion, resource and self contained).

  • Interview, recommend, supervise, and observe staff

  • Provide various professional development programs and opportunities

  • Purchase and monitor instructional materials

  • Monitor curriculum to ensure alignment with NJSLA

  • Oversee the development of curriculum dealing with, but not limited to, functional skills, community-based education, vocational skills, etc., and ensure articulation of these to staff in grades pre-K through 8.

  • Support staff in the development of students' IEPs

  • Conduct staff meetings, as necessary

  • Coordinate and supervise the implementation of summer in-district special education programs (Extended School Year and Summer Camps).

  • Verify IEP information and distribute profiles to staff

  • Select staff, purchase curriculum materials

  • Coordinate transportation needs and routes.

  • Handle necessary parent notification and parent concerns

  • Ensure proper entry of Realtime data for all in-district students and routinely monitor for accuracy.

  • Coordinate, with the transportation department, any special transportation needs and handle related parent or school concerns. Verify transportation information on IEP and implement special transportation procedures.

  • Evaluate programs, determine programmatic needs, including new instructional methods and programs, as well as materials, equipment, textbooks, additional classes, class size, etc., and make recommendations to the Director of Special Services.

  • Serve as Test Coordinator for all in-district classified students.

  • Assist in the development and management of the local school budget.

  • Meet frequently with staff under his/her supervision to problem-solve and maintain on-going supervision of the coordination and implementation of special education programs.

  • Review current litigation regarding special education laws and procedures and discuss this information with the Director of Special Services. May be required to attend resolution, mediation and due process hearings.

  • If necessary, assist Director of Special Services in organizing and conducting meetings with the staff, students and/or parents and appropriate district personnel and other resources, to comply with the state and federal regulations regarding special education programs of the district.

  • Assist the Director of Special Services in reviewing and evaluating results of district-wide testing programs and other evaluative measures used by the schools.

  • Work with the Director of Special Services to verify ASSA data, complete the Annual Data Report, prepare for annual audits and complete any other required State or Federal reports.

  • Attend Child Study Team meetings, as needed.

  • Other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the Director of Special Services or the Superintendent of Schools.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve Month Year

COMPENSATION:

As per the Gloucester Township Principal's and Supervisor's Contract.

VACATION:

As per the Gloucester Township Principal's and Supervisor's Contract.

EVALUATION:

Performance of job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
