GENERAL SUMMARY

Plan and oversee landscaping projects from conception to completion, including design, budgeting, scheduling, and implementation. Manage a team of groundskeepers assigning tasks, providing training, and ensuring quality workmanship. Oversees a variety of grounds related functions from litter pick-up and digging, to tree trimming, fertilizing, watering, installation and repair of irrigation systems. Supervises and assists in skilled and semi-skilled manual labor, operation of a variety of power tools and equipment. Inspects grounds, facilities, equipment and prioritizes the team's assignments.

CORE SCOPE OF POSITION

  • Selects appropriate plants, materials, and equipment for each project, considering environmental factors and sustainability.

  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and best practices in all landscaping activities.

  • Monitors and maintains landscapes to ensure they remain healthy, attractive, and functional over time.

  • Develops and maintain relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure timely delivery of materials and services.

  • Keeps abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in landscaping and shares knowledge with the team.

  • Prepare and present reports, budgets, and proposals to management, including Tribal Council as needed.

  • Prepares weekly work schedule and assignments for the staff.

  • Assigns, coordinates, and reviews the quality of work of maintenance workers.

  • Participates in hiring and disciplining of team members as needed.

  • Assists with on-the-job training of staff in the scope of the maintenance operations.

  • Responds to all tribal members and tribal government request that are nonemergency related.

  • Monitors and supervises subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers.

  • Ensures proper maintenance of landscaping throughout all public tribal facilities and land.

  • Makes repairs immediately if practical with tools and materials readily available and develops the plan to fix any problems that cannot be resolved immediately, communicating updates regularly to the Director of Public Works.

  • Diagnoses malfunctioning equipment, such as mowers, edgers, power carts and other grounds equipment.

  • Weeds out undesirable plant species from ornamental plant beds by hand with the use of rakes, hoes, or other appropriate hand tools.

  • Mows and edges lawn areas with power mowers and edgers.

  • Water lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover by use of appropriate manual or automatic systems or hoses as necessary.

  • Drives tractors operates power trimmers, trenchers, roto-tillers and other similar equipment. Ensures proper maintenance of tools, equipment and irrigation systems in a clean working order.

  • Oversees team fertilizing lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover by hand or with the use of power equipment.

  • Ensures the team picks up litter and debris in assigned areas, rakes and sweeps up leaves and other debris, washes down sidewalks and/or shovels mud and other debris from sidewalks, roads and aesthetically pleasing condition.

  • Performs all other related and compatible duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

  • Supervises a staff of Groundskeepers

Required Skills

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong knowledge of plant species, landscaping techniques, irrigation systems, and hardscape materials.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in landscape design, installation, and maintenance

  • Proven excellent leadership and communication skills to manage a team effectively.

  • Must possess advanced knowledge of proper gardening techniques, ornamental plant species and zeroscape designs and maintenance.

  • Advanced knowledge of safe work practices.

  • Excellent project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team, delegate tasks effectively, and ensure high standards of workmanship.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact professionally with team members, and tribal members

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in landscaping.

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

  • Ability to respond quickly to oral commands or signals in emergency situations.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high stress environment.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the Tribe, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and acceptance of diversity.

Required Experience

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

  • Associates degree in Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, or related field (preferred).

EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience (5+ years) in landscaping, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
