Job summary: The Engineering Supervisor position is typically the first level of management and will supervise a team that will consist of engineers, designers, and technicians. In smaller departments, the Engineering Supervisor may have no direct reporting structure, but is the Supervisor of an initiative or project, requiring leadership through cross-functional teamwork to deliver results. As an Engineering Supervisor at KME you will be responsible for design of world class fire apparatus to meet customer requirements while focusing on safety, reliability and meeting all applicable regulatory standards. The Supervisor at KME is relied upon by customers and dealers for technical guidance and support

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates activities of engineers, designers, and technicians by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of the assigned team to meet goals and objects as defined for the department.

  • Responsible for the review and approval of designs and related components.

  • Responsible for creating specifications and consistent with customer requirements, industry and regulatory standards, and established company practices.

  • Participation in customer meetings to understand design requirements and answer questions regarding product design parameters and/or limitations.

  • Create a robust fire apparatus design that is safe, buildable and avoids interferences.

  • Support regional and international dealers as needed.

  • Leads company initiatives, such as Lean, through his/her organization and departmental area of responsibility. Provides support to other departments and company initiatives such as lean and continuous improvement.

  • Plans and assigns resources as appropriate to deliver to bid review and order review schedule commitments.

  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through review of completed work assignments and work techniques. Identifies staff development and training needs and conducts the training or otherwise ensures that training is obtained.

  • Confers with management and production to determine engineering feasibility for production, and cost effectiveness for new and existing products.

  • Maintains industry standards while driving ingenuity in product design with a focus on profitability and cost reduction.

  • Responsible for administrative functions such as recording time and attendance and enforcement of policies and procedures.

  • Supports Production during the manufacturing and prototype process to ensure smooth flow on the production line.

OTHER DUTIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Perform or assist with any operations, as required or directed, to maintain workflow or respond to production requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business/Engineering field or AS degree with 10 years of equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum of 3 years of design engineering related experience in fire apparatus manufacturing industry

  • Excellent communication skills and proven negotiation skills

  • Strong organization skills and impeccable attention to detail

  • Customer orientation and ability to adapt/respond to different types of situations

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively

  • Prior leadership experience preferred

Proficiency in CAD systems - CREO

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

  • SAFETY: Follow KME General Health & Safety Rules, ensure safe operating conditions within area of responsibility, and notify coworkers and supervisors of hazardous acts and conditions. Proper use of PPE; use only defect-free equipment. Promote safety in department. Use proper lifting techniques and overhead hoist when needed. Maintain clean and safe working environment in line with 5-S Philosophy. Participate in hazardous communication training and safety meetings.

This requires defect-free work and understanding of the requirements of the company's quality system as it pertains to job duties and responsibilities. Must be able to check work to ensure conformance to process control instructions, specifications, and quality standards. Identify and segregate non-conforming product. Identify the need for and assist in initiating and implementing corrective and preventive actions when appropriate.   • FLEXIBILITY: Able and willing to work in other areas as needed. Must be flexible in taking lunch and breaks when workflow requires. Willing to work additional hours as necessary.
  • INITIATIVE: Actively participate in continuous improvement of products and processes to better serve customers and improve the overall profitability of KME. Actively seek out work in other areas when current assignment is complete. Make suggestions for improving product quality, processes, safety, and company profitability. Submit these implemented improvements utilizing our Minor Kaizen process.

Job summary: The successful candidate will assist in reviewing and approving the all technical applications related to the design and construction of fire apparatus and other vehicles the company may produce. The right candidate will be a senior member of the team responsible for the development and design of industry leading products. The candidate will perform complex engineering tasks and support the mission of the Department and Company. This position will require the demonstrated ability to interpret and apply engineering principles, theories and concepts to projects as assigned. The group will provide the technical data to support other departments and end users of the product. Responsibilities: * Review technical specifications for company produced vehicles to make sure that they are feasible, understandable, and complete so that all downstream functions may maximize their efficiency * Provide assistance to the Sales Applications group to answer customer requests regarding special options, packages, and configurations that affect the technical specifications of the vehicle * Check the design of proposed vehicles to make sure that all options work together and there are no interferences or conflicts * Assist in improving sales effectiveness by providing timely and accurate information for customer requests through the Sales Application group * Provide accurate supporting documents to both sales and engineering such as the general arrangement drawing, bumper layouts, pump panel layouts, and other information as the team may determine to be beneficial * Interface with other engineering managers and supervisors to communicate technical issues from their disciplines both to and from sales * Review technical requests to make sure that the apparatus proposed comply with industry standards and meet company requirements for quality and safety * Support production with assembly drawings, schematics, process definition, and work instructions as required * Maintain good working relationship with key vendors to incorporate latest technology * Assist in the training of sales personnel on all technical aspects related to the apparatus Requirements (education, experience, travel, physical, work environment): * Requires a BS degree in Engineering with 4 or more years of fire apparatus design experience, OR a minimum of 10 years of fire apparatus technical sales and design * Proficient in CAD software (AutoCAD, Inventor a plus) * Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) * Demonstrated capability to learn web-based and stand-alone specification configuration tools * Good communication skills, both verbal and written * Demonstrated knowledge of complete fire truck systems including cab, chassis, body, pump, aerial, and electrical and how these systems interact with each other. This knowledge may be shown by design experience and / or service experience. * Familiarity with industry standards such as NFPA and FMVSS. * Experience in writing and interpreting technical specifications for fire apparatus.
