The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for a Supervisor, Custodial Services, Job Code 074, Time Schedule 522 (260 Days), Salary Range: TBD. This is a School Employees Retirement System Position.

SUMMARY:

Assists with the supervision of the operations in the Custodial Services Department following the regulations/guidelines established for the Custodial Services Department as established by the Coordinator of Custodial Services and the Director of Facility Services. Assumes management responsibility for coordinating building cleanliness, maintenance of school grounds and ensures the safety of all school sites. Is accessible for emergency calls and assists with emerging responses during non-work hours, weekends, and holidays.

Secondary management duties include shared supervisory responsibilities for all Facility Services staff when and as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • State of Ohio Low Pressure Boiler Operator's License;

  • Valid State of Ohio Driver's License;

  • Diploma from an accredited high school or trade school; or a GED;

  • Minimum of five years' experience in general building maintenance and repair work, including three years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training;

  • Knowledge of Facilities Management, including the supervision of custodial staffing and a considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of general building maintenance and custodial operations;

  • Must be flexible and accessible for emergency calls and assists with emergency responses during non-work hours, weekends, and holidays;

  • Ability to estimate material and personnel needs for custodial and maintenance work;

  • Ability to supervise, establish, and maintain satisfactory work relationships with others;

  • Must have vast knowledge of physical aspects of building facilities and mechanical equipment, including proper care, and maintenance of security systems; heating and ventilation systems; including geo-thermal systems, chiller, and low-pressure steam boilers.

  • Must have effective supervisory, communication and organizational skills;

  • Must be computer literate and familiar with Microsfot Office products (Excel, Word etc), Google Applications.

Preferred: MUNIS, Aesop, and FMX Work Order Systems.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Supervisory responsibilities include (direct and indirect) for 271 custodial employees and occasionally shared supervisory responsibilities for all Facility Services staff when and as required;

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities within the organization's policies and applicable laws;

  • Responsible for daily inspections of buildings for cleanliness, safety concerns, snow removal, landscaping, trash removal; routine interior/exterior building inspections;

  • Responsible for annual outside inspections of all buildings;

  • Responsible to arrange for substitutes for all absent buildings and grounds staff; assurance that all buildings are open and ready for operations; assurance that all areas of every building are cleaned daily;

  • Respond to inquiries, safety concerns and emergencies concerning daily operations from, but not limited to, custodial staff, administrative staff and the public;

  • Supervision responsibilities, including, but not limited to, evaluations, conferences with employees; gathering and compiling data for development of purchasing bids; assist with departmental in-service meetings;

  • Responsible for vacation authorizations and recording of vacations requests and monitoring of usages within each worksite; maintains payroll of custodial staff;

  • Report to and carry out other duties as assigned by either the Coordinator, Custodial Services or the Director, Facility Services.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

Responsible to work cooperatively and effectively with members of the public, other employees, related public agency staff, community businesses and service providers; responsible for accurate and timely record keeping and reports as required; may be responsible to drive a motor vehicle with a valid Ohio operator's license as required by the position; and may be required to travel, both within the school district and outside of the school district. Responsible to attend meetings, in-services and training programs as related to the position held. Employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.

Often must visit school buildings and emergency sites, which can on occasion be loud. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to use a computer. Must have mobility to travel to school sites and respond to emergencies.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret state and federal laws, regulations and policies. Ability to verbally articulate concise instructions to employees at all levels, directly or by phone. Ability to resolve concerns with employees. Ability to interpret negotiated contract and engage in meaningful discussions to avoid conflict. Ability to address complaints or concerns from employees, the public and administrative staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to assist in the preparation, supervision and monitoring of the annual departmental budget. Basic understanding of mathematics, accounting, billing and invoicing procedures. Ability to gather, calculate and analyze data for purposes of vacation entitlements, overtime usage.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to identify and define problems, collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to utilize evaluation data to resolve personnel problems, safety concerns, evaluations and other issues concerning Board Policies and MOT Agreement language with costs and management rights.
