POSITION: Special Education Department Chair -Newtown High School

STARTING DATE: August 26, 2024

REPORTS TO:

Supervisor of Special Education, Director of Pupil Personnel and Building Principal

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for the day to day supervision of special education teachers.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Five years teaching experience in special education (Middle/High School preferred)

CERTIFICATION:

  • State of Connecticut Intermediate Administrator Certification (092)
  • State of Connecticut Professional Certification in Special Education K-12 (165, 065)

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates ability to effectively supervise, guide and consult with special education, regular education, and related services staff in the development and implementation of interventions and individualized programs that require the provision of specially designed instruction and related supports.

  • Possesses good working knowledge of the laws and regulations governing the delivery of programming, special education, and related services to students who require these provisions under IDEA.

  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field of special education, communication, educational assessment, and positive behavioral supports.

  • Demonstrates ability to build knowledge and capacity of staff through design and implementation of appropriate professional development activities aligned with the district's strategic plan and in coordination with the Director of Pupil Personnel and Supervisor of Special Education.

  • Demonstrates ability to effectively supervise and evaluate staff.

  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.

  • Demonstrates ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with community-based partners, providers, and agencies.

  • Demonstrates solid understanding of IEP writing and goal development within the framework of least restrictive settings and monitors paperwork to identify and address areas in need of attention.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for supervision of all elements of the Planning and Placement Team (PPT) functions and processes, including monitoring of IEP documents.

  • Responsible for supervising the development and implementation of high quality standards-based, relevant instruction and related services support within least restrictive settings, in accordance with IEPS, for identified students.

  • Schedules, plans, and runs monthly department meetings for special education teaching staff.

  • Works collaboratively with other district and building personnel in the development, maintenance and evaluation of certified and non-certified special education staff, as assigned.

  • Works with families and students with disabilities to assist them in supporting their children within district (or other) educational programs.

  • Provides regular updates to district administration for the purpose of disseminating information to staff, students, families, and community members.

  • Liaison to core academic HS department chairs to support accommodation and modification of curriculum as needed for the fidelity of instruction to students who require differentiated instruction under IDEA.

  • Assists in the interview, selection and hiring of certified and non-certified department personnel, as assigned or requested.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

Assumes other related responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Pupil Personnel.

REMUNERATION:

Appropriate Step of Teachers Contract based upon years of credited service plus additional stipend per Union Contract.
