ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, mentor and coach a team of UWs on SECURA policies, procedures and products

  • Administer performance reviews for associates, including developing career objectives, addressing performance issues and providing rewards and recognition for exceptional performance

  • Perform ongoing file reviews as requested by UW Directors and communicate individual results to UWs and UW Directors. May also participate in state underwriting audits as scheduled by the Training and UW Directors

  • Exercise authority on account referrals for hazard grade, limits, complexity, coverage, premium modifiers and reinsurance as delegated by the UW Directors

  • Consistently show ability to meet or exceed the annual financial targets of the assigned Commercial Lines team

  • Underwrite a territory of select agencies as assigned by the UW Director

  • Coordinate and assist in the backup plan when UW is out of the office

  • Actively participate in key projects as assigned by the VPUW and/or UW Directors

  • Communicate and negotiate with agents, Market Managers and external contacts

  • Actively participate in joint UW/CSS Supervisor meetings

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to use basic spreadsheet and word-processing programs.

  • Ability and willingness to mentor and train others while demonstrating competencies in team building, leadership and problem solving.

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Excellent negotiation skills and the ability to interpret financial statements, credit reports, and similar documents. Understands the basic concepts associated with rate reviews and the financial performance of a book of business.

  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively.

  • Excellent problem solving skills.

  • Ability to establish solid working relationships with internal and external customers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field preferred.
  • CPCU, CIC, ARM or similar designation(s) preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years commercial multi-line underwriting success.

Role Description The Underwriting Team responds to applications for insurance and assesses the risks of insuring a person or company using established processes/tools and actuarial evaluations of those risks. Opportunities in this area can include: * Rating & Quoting – responsible for analyzing RFPs, calculating, distributing, and responding to inquiries regarding formal Proposals with the objective of ensuring that client satisfaction, accuracy, and profitability are achieved. Major responsibilities include Rating, Quoting, and adjusting proposals based on customer and marketplace needs to support a competitive quote that meets our profitability as well as the customer's benefit offering needs. * Renewing – responsible for analyzing existing customer and portfolio renewal information to determine the pricing and consultative approach to continuing group insurance and service offerings for the coming period. Major responsibilities include historical experience analysis, assessment of customer needs, and understanding/action planning around evolving competitive pressures related to the customer/portfolio. Underwriters involved in the renewal of business are typically assigned a block or region of cases and communicate their decisions in a manner that contributes to both the profitability of the product and the reputation of the company. * Policies & Procedures – responsible for the processes, tools, and knowledge management systems that support the efforts of the Rating and Renewing underwriters. Major responsibilities include the creation of new and review of existing process and policy documents, development and testing of underwriting system tool enhancements in concert with the Pricing and Information Technology teams, and maintenance of existing system Underwriting tools to assure performance and execution within the teams is strong. * Analytics – responsible for the review and presentation of management and marketplace information to improve the decision-making and the line of sight into business portfolio performance in support the strategic action-planning by the leadership team. Education/Qualifications: * Enrolled in Undergraduate Degree Program * Preferred Major/Degree Program: Risk Management, Business, Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science * Strong analytical skills * Creative problem solving skills ~Housing is not provided~ Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization.
