Mission:

Maintain a fleet of automotive type vehicles that support Metro's revenue fleet. Develop and administer a comprehensive vehicle specific preventative maintenance program. Ensure all maintenance activities are completed within established performance guidelines. Assure vehicle availability to meet safety and passenger service requirements while maintaining a high degree of quality in the most cost effective manner possible.

  • Develop and maintain a vehicle specific preventive and predictive maintenance program.

  • Assure equipment safety.

  • Develop and maintain a vehicle replacement schedule.

  • Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the work involved in servicing and maintaining fleet equipment including automobiles, trucks, forklifts, hi-rail equipment, construction and maintenance equipment.

  • Develop vehicle maintenance budget and produce reports within established time lines

  • Total accountability through Metro's computer systems for all resources, materials, commodities and resources.

  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.

  • Has the ability and willingness to foster a team environment relationship within the Vehicle Maintenance Department and with other departments in the course of daily activities.

  • Develops and maintains positive public relations with emphasis on customer service. Committed to staff development and cooperative management practices.

  • Supervise union employees.

Required Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of proper mechanical procedures, methods, tools, and techniques necessary to effect proper repair of a largely diversified fleet.

  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline technology as it relates to engine repair and overhaul.

  • Knowledge of automotive and truck drive lines, suspension and brake systems. Principles and methods used in a program of preventative maintenance. Principles of supervision, training, budget preparation, administration and expenditure systems.

  • Skills should include organizational; written communication; oral communication; reading; comprehension; troubleshooting; mechanical; teaching; complex problem solving.

  • Ability to operate currant electronic diagnostic equipment.

  • Ability to research and organize data to develop long-range action plan.

  • Ability to react successfully to daily events while maintaining progress toward planned outcomes. Ability to prioritize multiple demands by internal and external customers.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical problems.

  • Ability to tolerate loud noise.

  • Ability to evaluate, organize and motivate union employees engaged in mechanical repair in an industrial environment.

  • Ability to keep abreast of new products, procedures, and changing technology relevant to this position.

  • Ability to prepare a budget and use a personal computer and job-related software applications.

  • Ability to be on call 24/7 to handle departmental issues.

Required Experience

Education

  • Degree: Two-year college or technical highly desirable.

  • Field: Auto or Diesel Technology or related field.

Experience:

  • Years: Minimum five (5) years required.

  • Field: Auto or Diesel Maintenance or related field.

Ability to perform greasing and oiling of all makes and types of buses and trucks; and other vehicles; have sufficient knowledge to compute the charges of materials used; be familiar with the oiling of all moving parts that comes under this classification. Changes tires. Issues and maintains records of Agency-owned tools and equipment. Makes on-street bus exchanges where no maintenance is required; this does not include the shifting of buses covered by section 16 of the Agreement. Must be capable of understanding verbal and written instructions and performing routine tasks in a workmanlike manner. Must possess the physical capacity to perform required tasks. Must possess the basic knowledge required to perform job tasks and a valid Commercial Driver's License.
