Experience and Education

  • High School graduation or equivalent.

  • Bachelor's degree in animal related field preferred.

  • Four years of experience in an animal care facility/operations to include two years in a supervisory/management role.

  • AALAS certification required.

  • Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification preferred or eligible.

Job Duties

  • Supervises the daily operations for animal facilities within the Animal Resource Center; management of animal care staff within the vivaria.

  • Oversees associated support programs within vivaria.

  • Provides support to Manager Animal Care.

  • Oversees the Assistant Supervisor Animal Care and/or Team Lead Animal Care.

  • Responsible for training and mentoring of animal care staff.

  • Makes recommendations for promotions.

  • Oversees record keeping for the animal care program (animal room logs, census, breeding, technical services, etc...)

  • Conducts facility inspections and assists in managing the quality assurance program in the animal facilities.

  • Determines needs and makes recommendations for staffing and new/replacement equipment and/or services.

  • Ensures facility and equipment maintenance is meeting operational standards.

  • Generates monthly progress reports for each facility.

  • Assists faculty and investigators to determine project requirements for animal resources, housing and care.

  • Responsible for training and ensuring safety programs are followed.

  • Participates in work start meetings for new projects and biohazard work (ABSL1-3 practices).

  • Assist in maintaining compliance for accreditation of animal care program (ARC SOPs, IACUC policy, the Guide, AWA, NIH guidelines, USDA, CDC, PHS policy, etc.)

  • Conducts and reviews performance evaluations for animal care staff.

  • Responsible for generating disciplinary actions for animal care staff. Implements ARC attendance policy.

  • Mentor and develop animal care staff.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Work requires ability to work logically and efficiently.

  • Work requires ability to push/pull pieces of equipment which may have dimensions in excess of 6 ft. high, 3 ft. wide and/or 8 ft. long, weights ranging up to 25lbs.

  • Work requires ability to lift equipment up to 50lbs.

  • Work requires ability to utilize hand tools and must be able to follow oral and written instructions of varying length and complexity.

  • Work requires ability to understand and follow concepts of clean and dirty flow patterns and sanitation and disinfection and utilize appropriate application.

  • Work requires ability to understand basic mechanical operations and routine maintenance, access basic computer functions, and mix chemical solutions correctly.

  • Work requires ability to maintain accurate written records.

  • Work requires ability to accurately measure/dilute cleaning solutions.

  • Work may require protective clothing.

  • Work is performed primarily in laboratory area.
