Under direction, supervises Guardian Case Managers who manage the personal and/or financial affairs of "protected persons" under a court ordered guardianship who are no longer able to manage their own affairs due to a medical, mental, or physical disability within the guardianship laws of the state; and performs related work as required.

This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill an upcoming full-time vacancy in the Washoe County Public Guardian's Office. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies they occur.

The Washoe County Public Guardian (WCPG) is seeking a Supervising Guardian Case Manager (SGCM) who will be responsible for supervising guardian case managers who perform guardianship services.  WCPG serves as a court appointed guardian over person and estate and thus engages in decision making on behalf of the protected person regarding medical care, placement, and other personal affairs, as well as finances and estate management of the individuals we serve.   WCPG employs a collaborative team approach to managing cases where information and experience are welcomed from all team members to inform the decision-making process to implement best practices and standards of practice from the National Guardianship Association.  The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2024.

For more information on this position, please see the Job Specification at https://www.washoecounty.gov/humanresources/Careers/jobspecs.php A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in human services, social work, criminal justice, nursing, psychology, business, or a closely related field AND four years of full-time progressively responsible experience in guardian case management to include at least two years of full-time lead or supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License Or Certificate

  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

  • Certification as a National Certified Guardian is required at the time of appointment.

  • Have a desire to serve vulnerable adults in a team environment in the protection, preservation, and daily management of court ordered Protected Person's and their assets.

  • Have the ability to read, analyze, and understand medical, psychological, and legal information and be able to contribute to the creation of a plan to meet the needs of the persons we serve.

  • Have training and experience in supervision of employees preferably utilizing a reflective supervisory style that promotes critical thinking and creativity.

  • Have a desire to collaborate effectively with community organizations and providers in pursuit of the best outcomes for the protected persons we serve.

  • Possess strong organizational and analytical skills to track data and support the adherence to department policies, procedures, and statutory mandates.

  • Have excellent communication skills both in writing and speaking to communicate technical information to a court.

  • Have experience with or exposure to benefits programs such as Medicare/Medicaid/VA/SSA/pensions.

  • Have effective interpersonal skills with direct staff, departmental co-workers, outside agencies, and organizations.

  • Have an ability to be self-motivated.

  • Demonstrate the ability to take ownership of problems to find solutions.

  • Possess knowledge of Estate Management, including representative payee responsibilities, investment tools, retirement accounts, tax reporting responsibilities, and trusts, is highly valued.

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Employer Lynx, Inc.

A consumer credit check will be conducted on selected applicants through Employer Lynx, Inc.

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective July 1, 2019, the $40.25 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification.  Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

You will receive an initial confirmation email once you have selected an exam date and time. In addition, you will receive a follow up email before the exam date with further details related to the examination process.

This exam is tentatively scheduled to be held on Wednesday May 22, 2024. You will be notified if you are eligible to transfer an exam score prior to the exam date.

This exam will be administered and proctored in Reno, NV on the above scheduled date and you must be present to test.

The exam will be 100% online multiple choice and will evaluate your expertise, knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

  • Staff Development

  • Evaluating Employee Performance

  • Managing Change Within an Organization

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Communication

  • Budgeting and Resource Allocation

Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook, the Department of Human Resources does not administer an exam when there are less than 20 qualified candidates.  Once the recruitment has closed, if there are less than 20 qualified candidates, the exam will be waived and all qualifying candidates will be placed on an unranked eligible list which will be referred to the hiring department.  If the exam is scheduled to move forward and less than 20 candidates take the exam as determined by the Department of Human Resources, the exam will be waived.  Only those candidates in attendance or have a transfer score will be placed on an unranked eligible list which will be referred to the hiring department.

3.After the exam is completed, you will receive an additional email notifying you of the results. If you pass the examination, you will receive your score and rank. This rank will be used to determine which candidates will be interviewed by departments trying to fill a vacancy.
4.Hiring departments schedule interviews from a list of top scoring candidates. If your name is not sent to the hiring department, it will remain on the list for future opportunities as they become available.
